ALL BCSC SCHOOLS RECEIVE AN A!
We're happy to announce that just before winter break, the hardworking staff and students at Brownsburg Schools got an early gift when we received word that ALL of our schools got an "A" for the second straight year!
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE:  REDISTRICTING PLAN NARROWED TO ONE OPTION FOR FALL 2014

Due to an imbalance in enrollment at Brownsburg elementary schools, a committee of over 70 parents and BCSC educators was formed to study and make recommendations to balance enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year.  This group is working together to find solutions that impact the fewest students while more fully utilizing available classroom space in all BCSC schools.  Currently, BCSC has a total of 26 empty classrooms across the district.  The redistricting of students at the elementary level will impact middle school placement for some of our students for the 2014-2015 school year.  Just as these adjustments will better balance the enrollment among elementary schools, it will also do so between middle schools.

The Enrollment Management Committee has spent many hours in several workshops to try to come up with the option that best balances enrollment while equalizing poverty rates, keeps class sizes down, maintains a representation of the racial diversity of our community, and, most importantly, disrupts the fewest number of students. You can see the presentations from previous meetings and the first community meeting in November when you CLICK HERE. The committee has narrowed the 22 initial options for boundary readjustment to the following:

  • The following neighborhoods would attend a different BCSC elementary school school and in some cases a different middle school in the fall of 2014:

Wynne Farms West from Reagan/BEMS to Brown/BWMS

Highland Springs from Eagle/BEMS to Cardinal/BWMS

Creekwood Estates from Eagle/BEMS to Delaware Trail/BEMS

Commons at Wynne Farms from Reagan/BEMS to Delaware Trail/BEMS

Bradford Park Apts from Eagle/BEMS to Delaware Trail/BEMS

Oaks of Windridge from Reagan/BEMS to Delaware Trail/BEMS

Green Street Village from Eagle/BEMS to Delaware Trail/BEMS

Country Meadows from Reagan/BEMS to White Lick/BWMS

  • The committee is continuing to examine the current feeder pattern for White Lick Elementary.  To further balance enrollment at our middle schools, WLE 5th grade students matriculating to 6th grade would attend BWMS in the fall of 2014.
  • Other topics still to be addressed by the Enrollment Management Committee include the potential for current 4th and 7th grade students to remain at their current schools if parents provide transportation.

Patrons are invited to review and discuss the option set forth by the Enrollment Management Committee at a community meeting Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 6:30pm at White Lick Elementary.

If you have questions regarding the work of this committee e-mail me at jsnapp@brownsburg.k12.in.us.

Sincerely,

Jim Snapp

TROOPS SHOW APPRECIATION FOR BCSC SUPPORT
In a previous Spotlight, you read that BCSC students worked hard in the month of November to prepare care packages for the US Military serving here and abroad.  We wanted to share a letter of appreciation from a grateful sailor stationed aboard the USS Harry Truman.

"My name is Kyle McCarty. I am a sailor with VFA-32 stationed aboard USS HARRY S TRUMAN. I received a very beautifully colored thank you note from a Brownsburg West Middle School student named Taylor. I wanted to take a moment to personally thank young Taylor, yourself, and the members of the organization for all of your continued support of our brothers and sisters in arms. It's not always easy being away from friends and family during the holiday season, but every little piece of home is a reminder that we have people ready to welcome us home at the end of our journey. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and support to America's Armed Forces.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Very Respectfully,
AE1(AW) Kyle McCarty

A Healthy Dose of Resolution Reality
If you rang in the New Year with a resolution to lose weight, quit smoking or achieve a long-desired goal, you're not alone.  About half of all Americans make a resolution to kick off the New Year.

Great, right?

Yes, but check back in with those folks in six months, and more than half have given up on their goal.

Here are some tips for seeing your resolution through to the end of 2014:
*    Don't resolve alone.  Telling friends or loved ones about the goal you're trying to achieve will help you stick to it.  Your social network can help be that little voice in your ear telling you not to quit, because they'll ask how you're doing.
*    Don't try to boil the ocean.  Make a goal that is specific.  Instead of saying "I'm going to lose a ton of weight and look amazing and be happier than I've ever been."  Try, "I am going to get my BMI down at least 3 points by my 20th high school reunion in October."
*    Do swap a good habit for a bad one.  If mid-afternoon drowsiness drives you to the vending machine or pantry for a snack, try planning a short, brisk walk each day for that same time---and even better, have a friend or co-worker do it with you.
*    Do keep track of how you're doing.  "Self-monitoring" can help you stick to your resolution.  It can be as simple as making a note on your calendar or keeping a log on paper or on your phone or computer.

STRENGTH IN ATHLETES WITH IU HEALTH AND METHODIST SPORTS MEDICINE

Gearing Up for Indoor Sports: Don't be sidelined by injuries

Dale S. Snead, M.D., Methodist Sports Medicine

As organized sports move indoors during the cold weather months, one of the biggest fears for parents is watching their kids get injured while competing. According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, an estimated 21.5 million American kids between the ages of 6-17 participated in team sports in 2011.

Sprains and strains and acute injuries are commonly seen in athletes participating in indoor sports. A pre-season physical, wearing properly fitting equipment, and recognizing pain early can prevent some of these injuries.

CLICK HERE for more on the most common injuries faced by athletes that participate in the most popular indoor sports according to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Stop Sports Injuries Campaign.

Attention Parents:
If you would like to visit your child's teacher, arrangements should be made with the teacher in advance.  BCSC staff is unable to accommodate pop-in visits to classrooms that may interrupt instruction.  We love to see our parents at special events that are scheduled before school, but we want to remind you that unscheduled visits can disrupt class time for many other students.  We appreciate your cooperation.
