FIT & HEALTHY WITH IU HEALTH WEST HOSPITAL
The BCSC partnership with Indiana University Health goes far beyond athletic training and building sponsorships.  IU Health and Methodist Sports Medicine will be sharing helpful information in our Spotlight Newsletter each month.

Fresh from a Farmers Market
Hendricks County was recently ranked the second healthiest county in Indiana, which sounds great until you factor in that Indiana is among the seven unhealthiest states in the country. Supporting communities in their obesity prevention activities allows IU Health West Hospital to collaborate with motivated partners and truly make a difference. Farmers markets provide access to fresh, affordable, healthy foods.

Indiana University Health West Hospital is proud to support several Hendricks County markets throughout the 2014 season, including the Brownsburg Farmer's Market.  The Brownsburg market is open every Thursday from June 5 to September 25, from 4:00p-7:00p on the Brownsburg Town Hall Green.

"The best step you can take to prevent disease is changing your diet to include lots of fruits and vegetables," says Tayyebeh Loghmani, certified diabetes educator and registered dietitian at IU Health West Hospital. "Buy fresh. Buy local. Buy in-season. After all, our bodies are made to need the fruits and veggies that are in season."

Study after study links regular family meals to a whole score of benefits. What you put on that table counts too. Fruits and vegetables are naturally low in calories and provide essential nutrients and dietary fiber. Fewer than one in five Hoosiers eat five fruit and veggie servings a day. A good rule of thumb is to eat the rainbow; the more colors in your diet the better.

STRENGTH IN ATHLETES WITH IU HEALTH AND METHODIST SPORTS MEDICINE
Heading Outside for Summer Sports
Dale S. Snead, M.D., Methodist Sports Medicine

As young athletes take a break from the classroom and head onto the playing fields and summer sports camps, it is important that they enjoy playing, get health benefits from playing sports and experience the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with participation in team sports. However some athletes push their body to the extreme and lose sight of what's truly important-their health!

According to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, (AOSSM) nearly 50% of all injuries sustained by middle school and high school athletes during sports are overuse injuries. Overuse injuries can cause permanent damage
