SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE:  REDISTRICTING MEETING NOVEMBER 5TH
Managing enrollment in a growing school corporation is a challenge.  With our academic success more students arrive in Brownsburg each year.  Unfortunately the growing enrollment is not balanced across all six elementary schools, nor the two middle schools.  This imbalance has led to ten portable classrooms at two elementary schools while twenty-six classrooms remain open at the other four elementary schools.  A committee of seventy parents has met three times this fall to examine enrollment patterns and has made initial recommendations to better balance enrollment in the elementary schools for the 2014-2015 school year.  This decision will also impact the middle school enrollment, better balancing enrollment between BEMS and BWMS.

The Enrollment Management Committee will continue to meet through the next three months, finalizing a recommendation to be presented to the School Board.  This decision will likely impact about 10% of our elementary students.  While the percentage of students impacted by this decision is relatively small, we understand this issue is not minor to those families who will be impacted.  On Tuesday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m. at White Lick Elementary School, I will provide an update on the process.  In addition to an overview of the process and decisions that have been made to this point, there will be a time for questions and answers.

By the time of our next Community Meeting on January 21, 2014 (same time and location), the decisions regarding enrollment management should be narrowed to one final choice.  That recommendation will be submitted to the School Board.  If you have questions regarding the work of this committee, there are three ways in which to learn the details of this decision and to have your questions answered including attending the community meetings, checking the information on the school web page (all information will be posted on November 6 following the Community Meeting) and/or by e-mailing me at jsnapp@brownsurg.k12.in.us.

Sincerely,

Jim Snapp
Superintendent

BEMS STUDENTS BRING CLEAN WATER TO STUDENTS IN UGANDA
Last year's BEMS Team 7-2 has helped to complete a well in Uganda!  In February, the students challenged themselves, their friends and their families to take the Water Challenge.  They drank only water for 2 weeks and with the money saved from not purchasing beverages, they were able to raise $1,923.83!  They designed and sold Water Project t-shirts promoting the issue, raising $76.  They also organized and ran a school wide dodgeball tournament that generated $1,217.  Through all their efforts and hard work they were able to raise a total of $3216.82! This money was added with donations from a few other organizations to complete a well that will give students at Kinoni Community High School in Uganda a clean source of water.  CLICK HERE to read more about the well!

30 Tips for a Healthy Heart

With heart disease being the cause of death for one in every four Americans, and risk factors such as obesity and diabetes on the rise, IU Health West Hospital, in partnership with IU Health and the American Heart Association invite you add these 30 Tips for a Healthy Heart to your calendar for the month: iuhealth.org/west/cardiovascular/

Attention Parents:
If you would like to visit your child's teacher, arrangements should be made with the teacher in advance.  BCSC staff is unable to accommodate pop-in visits to classrooms that may interrupt instruction.  We love to see our parents at special events that are scheduled before school, but we want to remind you that unscheduled visits can disrupt class time for many other students.  We appreciate your cooperation.
