BCSC - FIFTH IN THE STATE!
The Indiana Department of Education finally released the Spring 2013 ISTEP scores in early September.  We're proud to say that for the 2nd year in a row - Brownsburg Community School Corporation is the 5th highest achieving of Indiana's 289 public school corporations. Congratulations to the students and teachers who have continued their commitment to excellence at BCSC!
NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALISTS

Brownsburg High School is proud to announce that three students have been named semi-finalists in the National Merit scholarship program. The designation places BHS seniors Joseph Weaver, Justin Griffith, and Andrada Diaconescu (pictured left to right) among the 16,000 American high school students who are part of this elite group. Congratulations to these outstanding students and their families

WILLKOMMEN TO OUR GERMAN VISITORS
Brownsburg High School recently welcomed 20 students and two teachers from Kassel, Germany as part of the German American Partnership Program (GAPP).  Since 1991, BHS has participated in this exchange with Wilhelmsgymnasium school.  The students arrived last week and are taking part in nearly three weeks of experiences at BHS.  Each German student is the equivalent of an American 10th grade student and is matched with a partner student from BHS and lives with their family during the visit.  In turn, the Brownsburg students will travel to Kassel in June.  Our German visitors will spend time in and out of the school building, leaving for various field trips during their stay.   Brownsburg students will be treated to presentations from our visitors as they share the German culture.

So far the students have enjoyed their stay.  Katja says that everything here is "much bigger.  The school spirit is so important here."  Theresa thinks the American lifestyle is totally different as well as the school life.  "In Germany, we have 20 minute breaks between periods."  They are looking forward to taking in their first American football game at Homecoming on Friday and then enjoying the Homecoming Dance on Saturday night.  GAPP conducts this program with BHS every other year and it includes students in German II & III classes.  Ms. Jennifer Steed is the faculty adviser for this program and says "The German exchange is the best way for students to learn about language and culture.  We are very grateful to the host families.  We couldn't do it without our parent support."  If you want more information about the GAPP program at BHS, contact Ms. Steed at [email protected]
BWMS FEATURED ON COLTS PLAYBOOK
Last month we told you that West Middle School received a Certificate of Achievement for all of its work with the NFL's Fuel Up To Play 60 program.  The Indianapolis Colts have noticed as well.  This Sunday, West was featured on Colts Playbook with Chuck Pagano.  CLICK HERE to see it!
BHS JUNIORS STRIVE TO EMPOWER CLASSMATES
BHS juniors Jot Sahi and Christina Barraclough recently shared a presentation on Girl Empowerment that they created with female P.E. students.  The presentation was not made to fulfill a class requirement or club purpose, but to encourage their younger peers to feel empowered.  CLICK HERE to read the Hendricks County Flyer's feature on the presentation
FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENTS AND THEIR DAUGHTERS
Parents and their BCSC middle school daughters are invited to a Girls Night Out for a very special screening of the Indieflix film "Finding Kind" on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at 6:30 pm in the Brownsburg High School Auditorium.  The Kind Campaign is an internationally recognized movement, documentary and school program based upon the powerful belief in KINDness that brings awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl against girl crime.

The counseling departments at BWMS and BEMS are teaming up to bring this documentary to Brownsburg. If your daughter has felt the effects of meanness in the "girl world" or simply just wants to be part of the Kind Campaign, please join us on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:45 pm in the Brownsburg High School Auditorium. Doors 1 and 16 will open at 6:00 pm. You can go to the Finding Kind website for a short trailer about the documentary.  All middle school girls who attend must be accompanied by a parent or adult. The documentary will have more impact if viewed together. A short discussion will follow the movie.

Funding for this project was provided by a grant from the Brownsburg Education Foundation.
TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES THIS FALL
As fall break approaches, you and your family may be making plans that include some rest and relaxation.  At BCSC, we'll be making lots of technology upgrades while the students are away. Many computer labs, laptop carts, and teacher desktops will be upgraded in all 6 elementary schools, both middle schools, BHS and Harris Academy.  An overwhelming number of these computers are refurbished.  Use of refurbished "pre-owned" equipment is allowing BCSC to stretch funds available for technology upgrades.  The district spent less than half of what it would cost for comparable new equipment, and this upgrade will significantly reduce the average age of BCSC's technology fleet.  The equipment will come to BCSC fully refurbished and supported by a five year warranty.

BCSC operates a fleet of nearly 7,000 desktop and laptop devices.  Prior to this upgrade, over 2,800 of these devices were ten or more years in age.  These technology upgrades will start during Fall Break and continue through the end of the year.
BHS PRESENTS "ANYTHING GOES"

DONATE YOUR CELL PHONES TO BHS
The BHS Environmental Club wants your old cell phones.  Drop them off in one of the bins located throughout the school.  They will also be collecting used cell phones for safe recycling at the Oct. 18th football game.  Recycling cell phones is a great way to help the environment and people at the same time!
DT & BWMS STUDENTS HELP SET WORLD RECORD
Students at Delaware Trail at BWMS helped set a new world record for the most people exercising at one time for a healthy lifestyle.  They joined with the JAM (Just A Minute) organization and 1,354,714 people worldwide on Thursday.  With just a minute of exercise set to music these students are now in the record books!
BCSC IS GETTING READY FOR COLLEGE
Last week students at both middle schools and Brownsburg High School celebrated College Go Week.  This is a state-wide initiative from Learn More Indiana with the goal of helping Hoosiers of all ages plan for college completion and career success. At the end of College Go Week at BHS, 52% of Team 2014 had completed at least one college application after starting the week at 32%.

All sophomores completed career assessments and all freshmen created four year course plans.  A great number of juniors scheduled on-campus college visits.

All BHS elementary schools will have their own College Go Week after fall break, during the week of October 28th.

Attention Parents:
If you would like to visit your child's teacher, arrangements should be made with the teacher in advance.  BCSC staff is unable to accommodate pop-in visits to classrooms that may interrupt instruction.  We love to see our parents at special events that are scheduled before school, but we want to remind you that unscheduled visits can disrupt class time for many other students.  We appreciate your cooperation.
