Spotty's story

Spotty Cat was missing for four days after a fire destroyed his home on N. 60th St in #Philly on October 25th, 2013.

Sadly, he was discovered after being hit by a car and was brought to Ryan Veterinary Hospital at Penn Vet by a good Samaritan. The staff at Penn Vet knew we were looking for a missing cat that matched his description, saw that he was covered in soot and smelled like smoke, so they called us!

Spotty Cat was in bad shape, he spent the night in an O2 tank due to smoke inhalation, but his bigger issues were due to trauma from the car that hit him. He has multiple fractures in his jaw and a severe bulging eye injury. He underwent surgery to have part of his jaw wired together and his left eye sewn shut. He spent two more nights in the hospital for pain management and was discharged this past Thurs.

We spent the weekend trying to get him compfortable and trying to get him to eat, he is just not interested!

After much deliberation with Spotty's foster mom (also a Vet Tech) and Doctor at Penn, we decided that putting in a feeding tube may be in his best interest. So he was re-admitted to Penn this morning for surgery.

The swelling around his left eye has decreased slightly, but it appears still painful when he gets drops. While he is under they are going to revisit possibly taking it out and we asked them to shave off the tar-like areas on his skin from the fire!

Spotty means the world to his owners! They decided to go ahead and put him through the first surgery because his prognosis, if he starts to eat, is good! After everything they've been through, and lost (Spotty Cat's feline sister has still not been found) already, we want to try to do what we can to help Spotty for them!

Spotty and his family have a very long road of recovery ahead of them! We set up a fund to help his owners cover the cost of his care, which before the second surgery today was around $4000. The placement of the feeding tube alone will be an additional $600 at least, that's if he keeps his eye!

Please share his story! Any money raised above the balance of his Penn Vet bill will go to his after care, follow up visits, etc.

We will also be setting up a Spotty Cat Fund for emergency vet care of our future displaced disaster pets!

Thank you to everyone who has donated, sent well wishes and has been pulling for Spotty Cat and his family! Let's keep it going!
