The Experience Behind BSCG
 by Bud Surles

It is hard to believe that this next week I am having my 50th class reunion, the Class of '67, at Texas A&M.  That means I have served this industry (not counting my lifeguarding for 7 years prior to graduation), for 50 years.  It is an accomplishment I am very honored and humbled by.  I have had the honor of being only the second State Parks Director in Arkansas history, met interesting and wonderful people there, and built parks all over the State.  I have appeared before mayors, city managers, city councils, county commissioners, governors, legislatures, Congress, and Secretaries of Interior.  Each step along the way has been challenging, fun, and intriguing.

I helped play a major role in the creation of the Buffalo National River, Grant Village in Yellowstone, and was one of the party of five to be the first snowmobilers to climb Mt. Washburn.  It has never been easy, but always a growth experience.  It is exciting to me, that even today, I am still learning and growing.   I have also had the opportunity to meet with leaders, celebrities, fun people, and a few stinkers.

I spent a year traveling with Winthrop Rockefeller and he opened up a world to me I never dreamed possible.  He introduced me to Stan Musial, Augie Busch, Augie Busch, Jr., Dillon Ripley, and many more.  I worked for 4 years under the very pro-park governor, Dale Bumpers, whom I considered my boss, and later my beloved friend.  I became a friend with George Hartzog, both when he was the Director of the National Park Service, and later a private citizen.  I had dinner with Horace Albright, co-founder of the National Park Service, and had the opportunities to serve with legends while in the NPS, including Lorraine Mintzmyer the first lady to achieve the status of Regional Director.  Lorraine was a wonderful family friend who loved my family almost as much as I did.  I say all this, not to brag, but to demonstrate how blessed I have been in my career.

Now, in the twilight years, God has given me another wonderful and exciting opportunity.  We have been invited to participate with China in the development of their national park and forest system.  I cannot even start to express how honored I am to be a part of this.  Already, leaders there are seeing parks with the vision of men like Mather and Albright.  They see parks as laboratories for environmental awareness and enhancement.  And to be a part of their vision seems unreal to me.  I leave soon for a few days to begin the visionary process.

So as I look forward to the season ahead, I look forward to the excitement God has in store.  I can only hope that my footprint is light, my vision is clean, and the world will be a better place when I am gone because of the few greenspaces and parks I have helped to protect and preserve, and have built or helped build.  I remain, "Experience honed to perfection; ideas grounded in the 21st Century."  Bless all of you in the season ahead.

Tropical Trails RV Resort Looking to Break Ground in May 2017

Tropical Trails RV Resort, to be developed in Brownsville, TX, is getting ready to start the construction process! The new resort will be located 20 miles from South Padre Island, Schlitterbahn Water Park, and Boca Chica Beach National Park. An area that now appears to be a prickly pear cactus farm, will be transformed into a Bud Surles' Signature Resort design for owner, Hill Dishman.

The resort will have facilities to accommodate the Winter Texan guest and area construction worker influx. Among the completed design will be 415 RV sites and 107 cottages. Amenities within the park will offer a full spectrum of conveniences that will allow guests easy access without leaving. Planned completion of phase one is expected in December 2017.  We're excited to be a part of this great project!

June is Great Outdoors Month!

President, Governors Invited to Join Great Outdoors Month
by Greg Gerber of RV Daily Report

WASHINGTON - The weather is warming up and that means Great Outdoors Month is right around the corner, the American Recreation Coalition reported.

Eighteen recreation organizations from across the country have come together to ask President Donald Trump and all 50 governors to recognize the social, economic and health benefits of active fun outdoors on America's public lands and waters by proclaiming June as Great Outdoors Month.
To read the letter to the president, click here.

Public and private partners are again coming together to help people enjoy healthy, active fun outdoors with events like Kids to Parks Day, National Trails Day, National Get Outdoors Day, National Fishing and Boating Week, the Great Outdoors Day of Service, the Great American Campout and National Marina Days, the release noted.

Governors from both sides of the aisle will host kids on their residences' lawns or in nearby state parks to introduce them to great outdoors experiences close to home.
