Dear Reader
As we welcome spring, we also celebrate another milestone at the Museum. On April 5th, we hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the Museum's expansion... paving the way for new beginnings and exciting interactive exhibits. We appreciate your patience and support through this construction period as we build your new museum opening in 2013.

The South Florida Science Museum is Expanding! | |

Hardhats and shovels lined the South Florida Science Museum on April 5 as the community came out for a special groundbreaking ceremony. The event paved the way for construction on the Museum's expansion to begin, and nearly 200 people came out to cheer on Museum staff, board and community officials as they broke ground. Museum expansion plans include doubled exhibit space, expanded aquariums, an Everglades Adventure and more. Support the Museum's expansion and leave a legacy. This community deserves a state-of-the-art science center!

Dinosaurs and Bugs Take Over the Museum
|
The South Florida Science Museum is under siege! Tyrannosaurs, raptors and other exotic creatures have invaded the Museum and aren't leaving until May 13th. Visit the Museum and you'll come face-to-face with sharp teeth, deadly claws and even touch an actual fossilized leg bone of a 70 million-year-old Maiasaura dinosaur through this hands-on, interactive adventure. Dinosaur Attack exhibit was curated from the collection of South Florida dinosaur hunters, Robert DePalma and Rudy Pascucci.
Want to know what is crawling around in the backyard? Get a bug's eye view of what's lurking out there at the South Florida Science Museum's newest traveling exhibit, Backyard Monsters running from May 25 through September 16, 2012. This special summer exhibit features giant robotic insects, some with nearly 20 foot wingspans - a butterfly, praying mantis, and a dragonfly - whose anatomical accuracy has been endorsed by the American Entomological Society. The exhibit features interactive, enlightening displays allowing visitors to move remote controlled bugs, get a bugs eye view of the world, hands-on learning of how insects eat and also how they fly. In addition, guests can see a collection of exotic insects from around the world and real live creepy-crawlies. Backyard Monsters vividly presents the fascinating world of insects, up-close-and-personal... perhaps too up-close for the faint-hearted!The exhibit will open with Buggin' Out Nights at the Museum on May 25th from 6 to 10 p.m.

| Drop It, Build It, Fly It, Launch It - Thrill It Engineering Competition
|

Nearly 200 participants turned out at the 26th Annual Drop It, Build It, Fly It, Launch It, Thrill It Engineering Competition, which awards elementary, middle, home school, and high school students in five categories that test students' knowledge of engineering and science techniques. The event was sponsored by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, The Alvin I Brown and Peggy S. Brown Charitable Foundation and The Florida Engineering Society.
In addition to egg drops and rocket launches, students also built roller coasters, made aerodynamic paper airplanes and constructed miniature bridges with wood. Saturday's turnout was the largest in the event's history, and it could be that parents and teachers are realizing how lucrative a career in science or engineering can be for local children, said Lew Crampton, president and CEO of the South Florida Science Museum. "There is an increased interest in the sciences at schools, and why, because that's where the majority of the jobs are," Crampton said. Student projects were judged by the Florida Engineering Society, and the first through fourth place winners in each category received cash prizes. Events like the engineering competition make it fun for kids who might otherwise never consider science as a hobby or a career. Click here to see photos of the event.
