Spring 2017 Newsletter

Welcome Spring!

It’s great to get back outside, with only a light jacket and thoughts of the warmer temperatures that will soon be here. I’m looking forward to seeing all my longstanding customers and meeting the new ones that have recently signed on for service from Jeff’s Landscape, Inc. and/or Velvet Green Organic Lawn Care!

For those who don’t know me, I have lived in Wakefield my entire life, as has my wife, Annie. Our parents still live in Wakefield, and we are bringing up our two children in our hometown. We care deeply for our community. That’s why I recently became a member of the Board of Directors of the Wakefield Main Streets, Inc., an organization that promotes and enhances the economic vitality, cultural resources, historic significance and the quality of life in downtown Wakefield.

I am happy to be a part of this organization and to be a part of the business community. I started Jeff’s Landscape, Inc. more than 15 years ago after studying General Ornamental Horticulture at the University of New Hampshire. As a homeowner, I take pride in my own yard and want all my customers to feel the same way. Two years ago, after my lawn had just been treated with pesticides, my wife asked how long it would be before the kids could play in the yard. I knew what the label on the product said, but I just didn’t have an honest answer that I felt that I could stand behind with confidence. That’s why I started a new division of Jeff’s Landscape, Velvet Green Organic Lawn Care, a brand of organic-based treatments that make lawn care safer for our families, pets and the environment.

Everyone associated with Jeff’s Landscape and Velvet Green Organic Lawn Care believes in doing all we can to be environmentally responsible when it comes to lawn care. Last year, we took this one step further by acquiring a mosquito control company that matches our philosophy of only using environmentally friendly and safe products.

We are all excited about the upcoming season and introducing this new mosquito control service to our customers. Whether you need landscaping, lawn care, mosquito control – or mixture of the three – I think you’ll find all you need with us!

With Gratitude,
President

Mosquito Season is Right Around the Corner!
Tiger Mosquito* Moms

A female mosquito hatches from an egg which has been laid in water by a mother mosquito. Sometimes, a female mosquito is born from a single egg placed strategically by the mother to provide a safe place to hatch.  She will breathe air from a tube on her tail and feed on particles in the water using her well-developed mouth until it is time to transform into a mosquito. When the mosquito first emerges as an adult, she is a sugar feeder, and only after her mating flight does she become blood thirsty for protein to support her drive for healthy offspring.

This describes most of the general mosquito population but what makes a Tiger Mosquito Mom special?
Springing out of Winter
Like many, I love spring in New England--Mother Nature breathes life back into everyone and everything after the cold, dark winter and colors finally start returning to the landscape in the form of buds on trees, flowers like tulips, daffodils, and crocuses, and bright green grass. The cool season grasses of New England endure long winters and always manage to recover as vibrant as the year before. Have you ever wondered what causes your lawn to come out of its winter dormancy and, within weeks, turn into a fast-growing, healthy stand of  turf?
To learn about five factors that affect cool season turf grass growth, click here.

As you look out your window this spring, take a moment to think about the hard work your grass is putting in to become thick, lush, and green this summer--it's not easy being green!
