Educating for the Future: Practices - Programs - Partnerships
Calling all SE MA STEM enthusiasts - mark your calendars for the Network's summer event on Wednesday, August 15, 8:30 AM - 2:00 PM at Bridgewater State University. Build off the momentum from the Network's spring STEM & Careers program series and join us for: Educating for the Future: Practices - Programs - Partnerships.
 
Participants will interact with like-minded STEM stakeholders, engage in STEM challenges to replicate during STEM Week (October 22 - 26) & beyond, gather resources and information to support the integration of STEM PK-12 including MA Digital Literacy and Computer Sciences Standards (DLCS), integrated K-6 curriculum modules, and MA Science, Technology & Engineering (STE) practices. You'll network, discover STEM college & career pathways, and see the value of business/educator partnerships and work-based learning. Join educators, business partners, and community representatives for this important, interactive program.

Start Planning Now! Massachusetts 1st STEM Week is October 22-26, 2018   
Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, in collaboration with the Massachusetts STEM Advisory Council, have announced a first-ever statewide STEM Week, October 22-26, 2018.

STEM Week activities will encompass all facets of PK-12 STEM learning. Our Network is offering opportunities for STEM stakeholders, including schools, businesses, and community organizations, to meet and share ideas about potential STEM Week activities, hear from those who have plans in place for STEM Week, and take away resources to support your STEM Week events and activities during the August 15 event.

Communities which already have scheduled STEM Week events include: Attleboro, Bridgewater, Brockton, Carver, Easton, Fall River, Kingston, Marion, Plymouth, Rochester, Somerset, and Weymouth. Planned activities will take place at schools, businesses, libraries, and after-school programs and include STEM challenges, career & vocational education tours, open lab events, and a STEM & Career Pathways Seminar - just to name a few. Make sure your community is represented too.

Spring STEM Programs a Success
More than 400 attend meetings & seminars 
Partnerships  Advancing STEM Education along with explorations of STEM & Career Pathways were the themes of the SE MA STEM Network's spring 2018 initiatives. Exhibitors, speakers, panelists, and hands-on activities highlighted effective practices and programs focusing on the successful preparation of PK-16 students for the modern workplace.
 
Events included two Partnerships Advancing STEM Education Meetings at Sensata Technologies and Bristol Community College along with four STEM and Career Pathways Seminars at Weymouth High School, Sensata Technologies. AccuRounds, and Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School.

Network Board Members Ryan Robidoux & Pat Monteith Receive Awards
SE MA STEM Network Advisory Board members Ryan Robidoux and Pat Monteith were recently celebrated for their contributions to STEM and the community.

Ryan Robidoux, computer science teacher at Old Colony RVT High School, is recipient of the 2018 Teaching Excellence Award for Computer Science. The national award, bestowed by the InfoSys Foundation and Computer Science Teachers Association, is given to only five K-12 computer science teachers annually. Read more here.

Pat Monteith, STEM educator, mentor, and consultant, recently received the Leadership Award from Community Services of Greater Brockton. The group's mission is to improve communications with local service agencies, increase awareness of members agencies and services, and encourage collaborative efforts. Pat was recognized at the agency's Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner on May 30th.
SE MA STEM Network Represented on Governor's STEM Advisory Council
Dr. Stacey A. Kaminski, executive director of CONNECT and administrator of the SE MA STEM Network, was recently appointed to serve as one of 29 members of the Governor's STEM Advisory Council. The Council, created to expand access to high quality STEM education for students across the Commonwealth, serves as the central coordinating entity bringing together participants from state agencies, the legislature, and members of the public and private sectors involved with STEM planning and programming.

The Council has identified four areas on which to focus its work: expanding work-based learning opportunities in STEM fields; developing and implementing early college career pathways; broadening access to high quality computer science and engineering education, and; strengthening and aligning the work of the regional STEM networks.
NEWS from the State & Beyond
NSTA STEM Forum & Expo is July 11-13
Don't miss  the 7th annual NSTA STEM Forum and Expo in Philadelphia, PA.  This Forum is exclusively focused STEM educators tools, resources, curricula, and partnership info for successful STEM ed implementation. Pre-K to high school educators will find strands focused on their unique teaching and learning needs. Administrators and business partners will find new ways to build STEM education and career pathways.  Learn more about this unique, focused event here. Once there, you can register, look at their offerings of workshops, sessions, panels, and educator sharing events, and find a justification letter for your administration.  Questions?  Please email Kerri Murphy at [email protected]
Exploring Computer Science - Teacher Professional Development  Begins July 3
The Massachusetts Exploring Computer Science Partnership (MECSP) plans to offer high-quality professional development to high school teachers who wish to teach Exploring Computer Science (ECS), an introductory course of six units (year-long) structured to facilitate inquiry and equity-based instructional practices. First consideration will go to teachers able to teach the course in the 2018-2019 school year.

The professional development program begins with a one-week summer institute (July 30-August 3, 2018). Quarterly workshops will be conducted online to prepare teachers to lead upcoming units throughout the year. ECS professional development is facilitated by veteran Mass. ECS teachers who are trained facilitators. Click here for additional information and to apply.

CONNECT  Summer of Science Program Information is Now Online
CONNECT institutions throughout Southeastern Massachusetts offer a variety of summer science programs and activities for students entering grades 3 - 12. A sampling of programs includes Bridgewater State University's Summer Science Academy, Cape Cod Community College's Advanced Design, Mass Maritime's Sea, Science & Leadership Program, Massasoit Community College's Look What I Created, and  UMASS Dartmouth's  Robotics & Game Design Exploration. Click here to view complete 2018 program information.
