More than 200 people attended ALI's 2018 Spring Coalition Gathering and Cross-Cohort Exchange! The theme of this year's gathering was impact: Fellows and Faculty discussed their collective work to improve the lives of over 10 million people around the world. ALI has reached the "Race to the Finish" phase of its 10th Anniversary Campaign. Thanks to the Advancement Advocates across all Cohort years for their efforts to ensure ALI's lasting impact. 36 ALI Fellows and Partners from the 2016 Cohort returned to Harvard from across the US, Brazil, Canada, India, and Israel for the Spring Coalition Gathering and Cross-Cohort Exchange, making it the best-represented Cohort with over 70% present.

Fellows News

Haifa Al Kaylani (2017) is working to bring sustainable agriculture to the Jordan Valley. Ms. Al Kaylani's Haseel for Sustainable Agriculture has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Social Development in Jordan to launch a project that promotes agricultural development and combats poverty.

Dan O'Connor (2017) is helping CEOs and policy makers understand the future of work. Mr. O'Connor has partnered with the HBS Managing the Future of Work Initiative and offered his insights on re-platforming, re-skilling, and re-scaling at the World Retail Congress.

Alberto Mora (2014) is taking on a new role to protect and advance human dignity. Mr. Mora will be the new director of the American Bar Association's Rule of Law Initiative and will oversee its international human rights programs.

Mary and Steven Swig (2014) have publicly launched their campaign on student debt cancellation. The Swigs are calling their campaign " Freedom to Prosper" with the aim to change the national discourse on student debt.

Ann MacDougall (2013) is amplifying the voice of thought leaders in the encore movement. Together with Encore.org and the OpEd Project, Ms. MacDougall announced the Encore Public Voices Fellowship - applications and recommendations welcome by June 22.

Joe Mandato (2012) is helping prepare the next generation of healthcare leaders. Mr. Mandato co-teaches a course at Stanford where 15 undergraduates design, prototype and test their own solutions to healthcare problems, all within a span of 10 weeks. He also recently authored an article, " A Mandate to Put the 'Care' Back into Healthcare."

Alain Paul Martin (2012) is helping advance global governance. Mr. Martin spoke at the 2018 Horasis Global Summit in Cascais, Portugal on "Pathways to Resilient Global Governance."

Steven Strauss (2012) is helping Princeton students think about the future of Smart Cities. Mr. Strauss led a policy workshop at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School where students were able to present their conclusions and hear feedback from former US Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater (2010).

Tom Santel (2011) is working to make St. Louis a more vibrant community. Mr. Santel will become executive director of Civic Progress, an organization of CEOs and leading executives from the region's largest employers that advances important community initiatives.

ALI Chair & Director Rosabeth Moss Kanter (HBS) was named an Honorary Mayor of San Antonio and Honorary Judge of Hidalgo County, Texas. Professor Kanter was the keynote speaker for the San Antonio Bar Foundation's Law Week and received the honorary titles as part of the event. 

ALI Faculty Co-Chair David Gergen (HKS) says there is a surge in political activism by America's veterans. In a recent op-ed for CNN, Professor Gergen argues that these "next-generation veterans" could begin to transform our politics.
 
ALI Faculty Co-Chair Fernando Reimers (HGSE) says we need to be educating students for a democratic renewal. In an article for Brookings, Professor Reimers explains how we've moved from a "Nation at Risk" to a democracy at risk.
