February was Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month!

Margaret's Place acknowledged Teen Dating Violence Awareness month through exciting school-wide campaigns, workshops and art activities. This is a critical issue as 1 in 3 teen girls report being victims of verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse; and violent relationships put teens at higher risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior, and domestic violence. During February, Margaret's Place Peer Leaders conducted many activities at their schools including included handing out informational heart lollypops and "Love Is ___" stickers; giving assembly presentations and joint teacher-student activities; making PA announcements with statistics and information about how to get help; displaying student-made art and posters; facilitating lunch activities exploring healthy relationships; tabling and giving out resources and information throughout the school campus; passing out "compliment cards" with student-made words of kindness; creating Love Is/Love Is Not walls; and distributing newsletters to parents.

Margaret's Place Launches NEW Programs for Parents
Cyber Safety Workshop: In February, our MP counselor at Marina del Rey Middle School in Los Angeles piloted a new Cyber Safety Workshop for parents. Information included how to engage kids in open communication about this topic, developmental factors that put youth at risk, and tangible tools for parents to set healthy boundaries. This venue allowed for parents to share about feeling overwhelmed about how to support their kids in dealing with this tough issue. The parents in attendance enjoyed the workshop so much that they asked for a follow up session, which will be occurring next month!

Women's Group for Domestic Violence Survivors: In March Safe At Home will pilot a new Women's Group for Domestic Violence Survivors that we will be offering to parents hosted by the MP counselor at the John Adams Middle School in Los Angeles. This will be the first time that Margaret's Place holds a comprehensive multi-week program for parents.

"Talking to Your Teen about Healthy Relationships" Workshop: Our MP counselor at the Brooklyn Academy for Science and the Environment (BASE) facilitated a new workshop for parents that discusses the social, emotional and physical risks to teens related to teen dating violence and unhealthy relationships. Many of the parents expressed how important it was to have this discussion and their concerns about their teens being safe in relationships. The group brainstormed ways to engage their teens in talking about healthy relationships, including having discussions with them about their social media use and using TV, film and books as teaching tools.

HELP US MEET OUR GOAL!
Launched in June 2015, Safe At Home has been actively working toward raising our goal of $125,000 in support of our Margaret's Place programs by April 30, 2016.

To date we have raised $98,272 which leaves us only $26,728 short of our goal. Will you help us?

Your gift to the Annual Fund will allow us to provide healing services to youth who have been traumatized by exposure to violence, including domestic violence, child abuse, teen dating violence, and sexual assault.

SAVE THE DATES!
We are looking forward to our two New York events that are coming up in 2016. Save the Dates for our Celebrity Golf & Tennis Classic on July 21 and our Annual Gala on November 10.

Our Celebrity Golf & Tennis Classic on Thursday, July 21st will be held at the prestigious Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, New York. Nestled on the Hudson River, Sleepy Hollow offers breathtaking views and a history that dates back to the 1800s. Only a limited number of foursomes will be available and each will be paired with a celebrity, making it a "five-some!" We will once again be adding a tennis Round Robin tournament to the day's activities.

The Annual Gala on Thursday, November 10th will once again be held at Cipriani - 25 Broadway. We invite you to join celebrities, sports stars, philanthropists, and industry leaders in honoring the Commissioner of Baseball, Robert Manfred, Jr. The evening will conclude with a special musical performance to be announced this summer.
