New Partners, New Programs

Glen Foerd's history, waterfront location, art, architecture and landscape offer many opportunities to develop interesting public programs. Over the past year, we have developed four program areas that connect to all these special qualities. Innovation & Inspiration programs connect to Robert Foerderer's legacy of invention, and Florence Foerderer Tonner's appreciation of the arts. Innovation emphasizes Glen Foerd as a place to learn and create by encouraging individuals to learn through doing, to share new ideas that meet the challenges of today's world and to promote back-to-artisanal aesthetics. Inspiration fosters the appreciation and practice of the arts, and to empower and promote the talent in the Philadelphia region by featuring the work of artists, artisans, designers, innovators and entrepreneurs. Horticulture & Habitat programs find inspiration from Glen Foerd's historic landscape, farming legacy and waterfront location. Programs endeavor to instill in visitors and the surrounding community an appreciation for nature's beauty, the adoption of a healthier  and sustainable lifestyle, and the importance of protecting our environment. Partnering with area nonprofits and educational institutions help us share all that Glen Foerd has to offer with more people, and increases our value to the community. Over the last few months Glen Foerd has formed new partnerships with Philadelphia Waterborne, MaST Community Charter School, and the Center For Emerging Visual Artists.

Philadelphia Waterborne (PW) is using Glen Foerd's Carriage House to construct and assemble boatbuilding kits for use in area schools. PW has a two-fold mission, both educational and oriented to the cultural arts, and each rooted in a core belief that students learn best by doing. PW's programming is project-based, and experiential using small boatbuilding, environmental education, and maritime history as a means to engage students more fully in certain core math and science curricular elements. PW brings boat kits to partner schools where students learn basic boatbuilding techniques. A small, functional rowboat is the final product. Glen Foerd and Philadelphia Waterborne will work together to provide students environmental and historical programming associated with the boatbuilding projects.

MaST Community Charter School, located in northeast Philadelphia, creates innovative pathways for students pursuing knowledge focused on mathematics, science and technology. We are working together to highlight the intersection of innovation and the arts, increase knowledge among the general public of the latest technologies that are driving innovation, and empower the next generation of innovators. On Friday, May 8th, Glen Foerd will host the MaST Mini-Maker Fest an innovative, fun and family friendly event where visitors can explore robotics, engineering, 3-D printing, gaming and more through exhibitions and hands on activities.

The Center For Emerging Visual Arts (CFEVA) and Glen Foerd have partnered to develop the Glen Foerd Artist in Residence Program. CFEVA coordinates a strong regional support system for visual artists, advances the careers of professional artists in the region, promotes relationships between artists and communities, andincreases access to and promotes interest and understanding of visual art among citizens of the community. Through an application process, two artists will be selected for a one year residency. One temporary installation will be exhibited in the mansion, and the other on the grounds. Glen Foerd's Artist in Residence Program is an opportunity for artists to pursue their artistic discipline, and engage with the public while interacting with historic and natural elements of the estate.

We welcome our new partners and look forward to connecting more people with Glen Foerd.

Volunteer Spotlight

Nick Klosz is a man of many talents. We first met Nick when he kindly donated a small refrigerator and water cooler in response to our newsletter ad. We started talking and he found we had other needs he thought he could help us with. Well, one thing led to another and soon we had wi-fi in the mansion, a new coat of paint on exterior dining room sills, rewired offices, decluttered basement, repainted interior drawing room shutters, etc. The list is a long one! Due to our serious tool shortage, he started bringing his own. In the end, he decided we needed a tool room. His solution? Cleaning an old basement workroom and donating every tool you could possibly imagine! He's certainly a man that makes things happen!

Nick is a lifelong resident of Northeast Philadelphia. Before becoming a super volunteer, his first job was as an industrial engineer. When manufacturing jobs left the area, he became a Philadelphia police officer. Nick implemented the department's COMSTAT (Computer Assisted Statistics) system, which analyzes crime patterns to determine where to utilize manpower for deployment. Nick retired in 2013, and started volunteering at Glen Foerd last year.  In addition to being an awesome volunteer and all around nice person, Nick loves to travel, enjoys motorcycling and listening to old-fashioned piano music. He's particularly fascinated by player pianos and organs.

Glen Foerd is always in need of volunteers. Send us an email (info@glenfoerd.org), or call us if you're interested in helping with our special events, giving tours, or caring for our gardens.

Greetings From The Director

You may have noticed that we are highlighting Glen Foerd's amazing stained glass laylight in our print material. The laylight is on our new sign at the corner of Grant Ave. and State Rd., as well as our newsletter and website. It is one of the most beautiful and unique aspects of the mansion. We hope showcasing the laylight will entice people who have never been inside, to take a tour. You will notice there is a grid pattern appearing in shadow on the laylight photo. The grid is the skylight that is above the stained glass. The decorative stained glass is too delicate to withstand the outdoor elements, and therefore must be protected.

Glen Foerd is beginning a five-year capital improvement plan to address deferred maintenance issues. The most pressing needs are the repair and restoration of the mansion's balustrades and shutters. An 1850 mansion is a maintenance headache no matter how large the budget, but for such a small nonprofit it is especially challenging. The board of directors developed a five-year plan prioritizing improvement projects. Each year a portion of available endowment funds will be released to help cover the costs. This year's project is restoring and repainting the mansion's riverside shutters.

Glen Foerd has been awarded a 2015 grant from the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. The Philadelphia Cultural Fund is a non-profit corporation established by Philadelphia's Mayor and City Council in 1991 to support and enhance the cultural life and vitality of the City of Philadelphia and its residents. The Fund promotes arts and culture as engines of social, educational and economic development in the Philadelphia region. On March 4th, Glen Foerd was honored to participate in Philadelphia Cultural Fund's Grant Check Ceremony at City Hall. Thanks to significant support and advocacy, the Fund's 2015 budget was nearly restored to pre-recession level. The award will help Glen Foerd welcome guests, support staff, host programs, and care for the historic estate. A special thank you to Councilman Bobby Henon and Councilman at-large David Oh (pictured) and the entire City Council, for their continued support of Arts, Culture, and Heritage in Philadelphia.

Best,

Meg Sharp Walton
