Wyoming Fly Fishing Guide Service / Platte River Fly Shop

Dear ,

Spring greetings!!  Here at the Platte River Fly Shop we are already two months into an unbelievable year of fishing on the North Platte.  The Grey Reef Section has  been consistently producing bigger and more fish than we have ever seen!!  2011 is definitely the year for giant rainbows at the Reef.  With the huge snow pack this year our flows are already up to 4500 cfs.  This is a lot of water for spring but because we are a tailwater this water is gin clear out of the reservoir and the fishing is fantastic. The guides and I have been blown away by the size of the rainbows that we are seeing this year.  We have put a lot of true trophies to the net so far in 2011. Check out our spring trophy wall.

I have received a few calls from people concerned with what the high water will do to the fishing and I wanted to let you all know that this is a good thing.  High water will protect the spawning fish from wading boots and pelicans.   It will also prevent warm water conditions this summer.  We have enough snow pack to fill the reservoirs and keep that cold clear water flowing all summer.  Trout are designed to withstand higher water levels and the fact that our runoff is clear allows us to fish  these giants at their absolute physical peak.  This peak comes from navigating the currents of high water in the spring .  And also,  the last time I checked, trout like water.

The guides and I would like to personally  encourage anyone who wants to hit the water to give us a call,  our bookings are filling up fast and spring fishing on the Reef is definitely something you don't want to miss.   Big Water and Big Fish.  You can't beat it!

 The Guides Take

The giant water flows have supercharged these fish.  Look at the facts: with more water these fish are swimming harder to stay in their holding water.  The high flows are also washing in worms, leeches and tons of other food so they are eating well.  We got these fish exercising and eating right!!!!!!  This spring is the time to go after these monster fish at their absolute physical peak.  Come tie into some rainbow freight trains!!

The snow pack is looking really good for the North Platte drainage this season in Wyoming. This winter we have already received 140 percent of our snow pack, when most years we get most of the snow pack in the months of April and May. Pathfinder and Semino are about 80 percent full. With most down river reservoirs full, all this snow pack is going to run the river high again. With this being a tailwater, we should be running high and clear most of the spring and summer, which is good news for the fish and the fishing. Along with this, Weed and Pest is calling for another big hopper year.  All in all, 2011 is looking like another unbelievable season!

Fishing is ridiculous! I Had clients and friends, Chris and Brian, up from Denver and they put some pigs in the net. The 2 days before, I had clients Brian and Mark and they were fortunate enough to put over 100 fish in the boat one day and some real pigs the next.

Season has gotten off to a great start!  Clients have been awesome and the fishing has been phenomenal.  Lots of massive fish coming to the boat...couldn't really get any better!  I love this job.

Headquarters

With the booming business of the guide service, as well as the online business, we have outgrown our 2 room school house. We completed construction on the new Client Lounge / Guide Service Headquarters and Fly Fishing School next door to the shop. The guides and I are all really excited about it.  Feel free to stop by any time and stay as long as you like.

Three Wyoming Tailwaters in Three Days

For the 2011 season we are putting together a package that we are all really excited about.  It is the "Three Tailwaters in Three Days Package" and our response so far has been great.  The package is three days and gives anglers the opportunity to fish not only Grey Reef but also the Miracle Mile and the blue ribbon section of the Big Horn River in Thermopolis WY.  You will have the same guide for all three floats and they know all the secrets to putting you into, and keeping you into fish on all three of these distinctly different and beautiful tailwaters.

Because of the North Platte and it's trophy trout reputation, we have had a lot of interest from new clients.  So, If you have any particular dates in mind, please give us a heads up. We like to give preferential treatment to all return clients as you are the back bone of our guide service here in Casper. Reuniting with old friends is one of the aspects of guiding we all look forward to at the start of each season.  We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully putting you on some more big fish this year!

Learn to love the High Water

With the high flows this year,  wade fishing will be tough.  The best way to enjoy the North Platte is in a boat.  Guided Float Trips for two anglers start at only $310.00, and for you do-it-yourselfers we have low profile Clackacraft drift boat rentals for only $85.00 a day.
About Us

Wyoming Fly Fishing Guide Service and Platte River Fly Shop started running guide trips on the Gray Reef sections of the North Platte in 1987, a full eleven years before any other outfitters. We were the first outfitters to start targeting the big trout that these waters have become famous for.  Our guides have been rowing this river longer than any other guide service. Today we are the largest and most experienced guide service on the Gray Reef, Miracle Mile and Fremont Canyon sections of the North Platte River.  With over 200 miles of float-access and 40 miles of wade-access waters with private water and private boat ramps, we can provide a multitude of guided fishing trip options. The oldest service and most experienced guide staff combined with some of the biggest wild trout in the country can only produce great photos and memories.

Wyoming Fly Fishing,

Good morning, just a note to say what a great day we had on the river!  We had Josh Grube as our guide and he was great.  I have never been on a guided trip before and I think Josh kind of spoiled us.  He not only put us on big fish all day but taught me some great stuff throughout the day.  I have been fly fishing for about 16 years and learned some great techniques and tips that I will always carry with me such as: hook set and handling fish better,  casting in the wind, and mending.  We will be back and bring friends.  Thank you so much for such a great experience.
