Signs of Spring in North Hero The Pussy Willows have been spotted but we are still waiting for  the ice to go out and a crocus to appear.

Spring is officially here and we are looking forward to the warmer weather and welcoming you back to the North Hero House for the 2015 season. 

 

Spring is a beautiful time to visit the Lake Champlain Islands. The birds are returning, fishing is excellent and biking throughout the islands is magnificent. 

 

BIRDING

The waterfowl and the Great Blue Heron start returning to the Champlain Islands in late March and in April the 

The Wood Duck, frequently visible at the Missisquoi Refuge starting in mid-March

songbirds follow.  Some of the

migrations are quite spectacular. I have witnessed what  was seemingly a bank of snow and ice near the drawbridge suddenly rise up and reveal an enormous flock of white snow geese with black tipped wings. This migration is visible in many locations throughout the islands but the nearby Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge is a particularly good spot.

A Great Blue Heron Rookery within walking distance from the inn is also home to ducks, geese, osprey, beavers and  much more.

Great Blue Heron rookery is within walking distance from the North Hero House. Resembling a pre-historic scene, the blue heron make their nests on dead trees high above a seemingly primordial swamp.  The hatchling herons remain in the nest until the end of July and are fed by their parents until they can fly. 

 

FISHING

Lake Champlain is one of the best fresh water fisheries

in North America. The lake is home to game fish such as Salmon, Lake Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye and Northern Pike. May is one of the most popular months for fishing as Lake Trout and Salmon are often seen

near the shore. The North Hero House can arrange fishing charters with Captain Mickey Maynard who will pick you up at the North Hero House Marina for a memorable day on the water. Give us a call to book your fishing vacation. We will even cook your catch if you bring your fish back to the inn cleaned and ready for the pan.

BIKING

The biking season begins in May. Biking in the islands is truly a special experience. The views of Lake Champlain, the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains are breathtaking and abundant. The terrain is gentle and the wide open spaces, the big sky and the lakeside routes provide for a spectacular view at every turn. The North Hero House hosts many bike touring companies from May to October. You can choose a guided Champlain Islands Bike Tour with Vermont Bike Tours or Discovery Bike Tours and enjoy a wonderful stay at the North Hero House. If you prefer to guide yourself, the Champlain Islands Bikeways have mapped out 5 different tours that will keep you busy for a weekend or more. Click here for a Champlain Bikeways Brochure. The North Hero House offers a personalized alternative to standard hotel services for group events. We have hosted board meetings, corporate strategy sessions, bridge clubs, weddings, rehearsal dinners, banquets and holiday parties.
