Did you know...

Al Capone was a famous Chicago mobster. He was eventually brought down by agents from the Treasury Department (this was pre-IRS) who were able to prove that he was avoiding income tax. Let that be a lesson to us all? (source).

4,443 RETURNS DOWN, 6,557 TO GO!

Cherished Number Crunchers,

April Showers Bring May Flowers, and February Tax Returns,
Bring March Money Earned.

But March Tax Returns do that too!  We usually see a lull in client demand in March but similar to last year, a lot of clients have been waiting to file their returns, so we're expecting March to be busier than usual!

Did you come out last weekend? Pat yourself on the back because it was our busiest Saturday yet, and it was awesome! Volunteers and staff completed 550 tax returns and securing $1,174,944 for our clients.

This coming Saturday should be busy and we still need to fill  72 open spots. And good news - ProSeries is updated, so no need for awkward tax extender conversations!

If you attended training, but were unable to finish the test, let me know and we can find a time for you to come in and use the software. Also, if you want to try your hand at the Advanced exam, let me know and we can work out a time for you to come in.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me at volunteers@goladderup.org

Sincerely,

Anna Phelan
Volunteer Program Manager

vowVOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK

Meet John Mann, a Ladder Up Advisory Board member who recently joined  Abbott  and is enjoying the focus on transfer pricing, supply chain and tax reform. He looks forward to other team members joining him at volunteer sessions.

John is also this week's Volunteer of the Week! John has been volunteering for Ladder Up for five years and on the Board for three. He loves heading over to Wilbur Wright  College to do taxes, saying "We have an awesome team there!" because he likes to use his tax background to help others and to work with a group of volunteers who are inspiring. Well, John, YOU'RE pretty darn inspiring, too!

When John's not chipping away at ProSeries, he's snowboarding, cross country skiing, doing yoga or biking-and he's not messing around, he rode 5,000 miles last year, including rips across Wisconsin and through Oregon. He also loves eating Italian food and following Big 10 football and basketball.

Random Question for John:

LU: If you got to have brunch with one person alive or dead, who would it be?

JM: Bruce Springstein. I just read his autobiography. We see his success, but he truly paid his dues and made several strategic decisions to achieve that success. Also, his music is timeless.

It's the last day of Tax-A-Thon and we can't wait to share the results with you next week!

This week's prize winners volunteered at Addison, Plainfield, and Harold Washington Library! Lucky ducks!

Roxanne Chow continues to lead the charge raising  $1,685!
