April 2016 President's message

Dear Friends,

First of all, I hope you had a wonderful Easter and I also wish you a very Happy Passover! I hope your holidays are always filled with love, laughter and good will!

It has been a month since our beautiful Red Carpet Event on El Paseo, but people are still talking about this amazing evening of glamour, festivity and fun. Wolfgang and Klaus Puck created a sumptuous menu from appetizers to desserts topping off the evening with a Gold wrapped chocolate Oscar. Warren Jones, and his team The Jones Group designed an elegant evening with stunning d├ęcor making every guest feel like stars!

Our sincere gratitude goes to Fred Fern and The Shops on El Paseo for their support and dedication to PSWIFT. Due to their generosity we made over $7,500.00 which benefits our operations, programs and community outreach. We are most grateful!

We have some sensational events coming up in the near future. Please join us for the "When Voices Meet," screening on April 27th. This is a remarkable film about the beauty of When Voices Meet: One Divided Country; One United Choir; One Courageous Journey. Please see additional information concerning the event later in this newsletter.

May is always a special time of year because we give out our scholarship dollars to those deserving schools and students in the arts and media departments. Please join us at beautiful Palmers Restaurant in La Quinta on May 18th from 5:30-7:30.
All new members who have joined this past year are invited to a tea that will be held on June 4th at DeAnn Lubell Ames' home catered by the Board of Directors. Thank you Deann!  Another special thanks to Denise Dubarry Hay for hosting the Annual Books Pals Luncheon to thank and honor our BookPALS readers on April 23rd.
Please make sure to mark your calendars for these events.
Thank you for your continued support!
My best always,

Entertainment and Q &A
Shari Belafonte approached Palm Springs Women in Film and Television (PSWIFT) and requested that we host a screening of an 86-minute documentary filmed in 1992 by South African singer Sharon Katz who brought together high school students from the four segregated groups: whites, blacks, 'coloured', and Indian for the first time in history and in their lives. Shari and her father, Harry, visited South Africa in the turbulent transition and were friends of Nelson Mandela. Sharon Katz formed an integrated group with hundreds of student singers and traveled all over the country on the "Peace Train" in an effort to abolish apartheid.
PSWIFT is hosting two screenings of the South African documentary.  The screenings will be on Wednesday, April 27 at the Mary Pickford Theater in Cathedral City. The event is sponsored by PSWIFT and will be accompanied by filmmaker Sharon Katz and Shari Belefonte. Mitch Blumberg, Board Member and Co- Chair of this event is working with Dr. Christine Anderson and Palm Springs Unified School District to arrange a morning screening for high school students.  The District is enthusiastic about the project and will supply buses for transportation.
In the evening, there will be a screening for adults with a reception including wine and appetizers at 5:30pm, screening at 6:30pm, Q&A with the filmmaker after the screening. The cost is $20 per attendee. The film documents a unique heart-felt real human bonding across racial lines that are as valid today as it was in the 1990's in South Africa.
The event benefits PSWIFT scholarships, BookPals, and the filmmaker, Sharon Katz, who is organizing a "Peace Train" here in the U.S.
