Early Childhood Advocacy Day
February 3 (Albany) - This year's Early Childhood Advocacy Day was co-sponsored by the Winning Beginning NY coalition.  Speakers at the rally included parents, business leaders, pediatricians, law enforcement and members of the military, all citing benefits of early learning in the short and long term.

A new report,  Children Can't Wait: Make Quality Early Learning a Top Priority in the 2015 Enacted Budget , highlights that the Governor's proposed budget includes no new funding for four-year-olds waiting for full-day pre-K, nor does it include new funding for child care. However, 62% of the state's four-year-olds promised a seat in full-day pre-K are still waiting for a seat.

This includes 51,000 children in high need communities.

"Investing in high-quality early learning is a winning strategy that will significantly close the achievement gap. It gives our youngest learners, particularly those most at risk, the opportunity to enter school fully prepared," said Nancy Kolben , Executive Director of the Center for Children's Initiatives . "Yet 61% of four year olds are still waiting for full day pre-K and 78% of children eligible for subsidized child care are still waiting for a slot. The return on investment is clearly documented by multiple research studies. High-quality pre-K and high-quality child care address both the needs of our children and make it possible for families to work and raise eager younger learners.  New York State cannot afford to do less. "

Sesame Workshop, Child Care Council
Collaborate to Teach Resilience to Young Children

Sesame Workshop and Child Care Aware® of America are partnering with Child Care Council, Inc., to launch a community outreach effort to build resilience and self-esteem among young children. Through this collaboration, the Child Care Council will offer Sesame Workshop's Little Children, Big Challenges

outreach program to the greater Rochester region. Designed to help increase self-awareness and boost self-esteem, this program introduces the skills and strategies children ages 2 to 5 need to build resilience and perseverance, such as dealing with significant transitions and situations including mean or aggressive behavior, sibling rivalry and relocation; and day-to-day challenges like trying new things, learning from mistakes, making new friends, not being able to do something yet, and resolving problems with friends.

The Council is offering free tool kits with activities and positive routines to help parents, caregivers and educators foster young children's resilience. The bilingual (English and Spanish), multimedia tool kits are composed of a Sesame Street DVD featuring a Muppet story and music videos with real children and families; a family guide with tips and strategies for dealing with grieving, incarceration and divorce; a community guide for child care, nursery school and other programs working with children; and links to additional materials online.

"Child Care Council is delighted to be selected for this exciting partnership with Sesame Workshop and Child Care Aware of America," said Child Care Council CEO Barbara-Ann Mattle. "As a leading agency working to improve child care quality in the region, the Council is in a unique position to provide Sesame Workshop's Little Children, Big Challenges materials, through our ongoing outreach to child care providers, parents and community organizations."

Herstory Writers Workshop Series for
Family & Group Family Providers

Last autumn, a group of women and an early childhood specialist from Child Care Council of Nassau gathered together to create memoirs of their experiences as family child care providers with the guidance of Erika Duncan. The stories created by this group were heartbreaking, joyous and relatable for many child care providers participating in the writers series. One memoir was chosen by the Herstory writers group and shared at Early Childhood Advocacy Day on February 3. Participants were incredibly moved upon hearing that the writing they created was being shared at the State Capitol on such a momentous occasion. For more information on the Herstory Writers Workshop series, please visit  Herstory.
Statewide Infant & Toddler Conference

January 12-13 (Poughkeepsie) - The Statewide Infant & Toddler Conference was held at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel for 175 participants who heard from Susan Perkins of the NYS Council on Children & Families, Janice Molnar from the NYS Office and Children and Family Services, and Janet Gonzalez-Mena, early childhood author and consultant. Grantees touring the EATON facility.
The Chemung County Child Care Council received a generous grant from EATON for their First Book program. This is the 4th year that the Council has received this funding. The grant allows the Council to purchase books that are delivered via a partnership with the Home Visiting Nurses from the Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Development Services (CIDS) program. Nurses deliver books every month to 150 children in the Healthy Families program. By year's end, the children have a library to call their own.
