THE HUNGER GAMES- Opening Friday, March 23rd at the Capitol Theatre, Chagrin Cinemas, Shaker Square Cinemas, Solon Cinemas and Southside Works Cinema
|
First showing at midnight Thursday night!
In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the Hunger Games are broadcasted throughout Panem as 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is ed as her female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.

Mickey Prohaska is a small-time insurance agent looking for a way to jump-start his business, reunite with his estranged wife and escape the frigid Wisconsin weather. This self-proclaimed master of spin believes that salesmanship is about selling a story - all he needs is a sucker willing to buy it. He hits pay dirt with a lonely retired farmer who is sitting on something much bigger than an insurance commission. But Mickey's attempt to con the old man spins out of control when a nosy, unstable locksmith with a volatile temper dramatically ups the stakes, trapping him in a madcap spiral of danger, deceit and double-crossing.

It's been a few months since the Cinematheque showed a movie at the Capitol Theatre. But tonight the Cinematheque returns to W. 65th and Detroit to present one of our most requested movies of the past ten years! Japan's Battle Royale, which is finally available theatrically in the U.S., is not only one of Quentin Tarantino's favorite movies and among the most controversial films of the last decade, it's also a striking precursor to The Hunger Games (which might have ripped it off). Set in a futuristic Japan wracked by fiscal collapse, unemployment, and rampant juvenile crime, the film depicts the implementation of a new government law that picks a 9th grade school class at random, sends it to a remote island, and forces the students to participate in the ultimate game of survival: hunting and killing each other with an assortment of weapons until only one person is left standing. Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill) and Takeshi Kitano (Fireworks, Zatoichi) star in this wickedly satirical, darkly humorous, and gleefully violent action-horror comedy that has been argued, acclaimed, and banned around the world (but hasn't been screened in Cleveland since its debut at the 2001 Cleveland International Film Festival).
Original uncut, uncensored, unrated version! People under 17 must be accompanied by parent or guardian, but no one under 15 admitted at all! Shown on the big screen at the Capitol Theatre, 1390 W. 65th St. at Detroit Ave. on Cleveland's West Side.
Admission $9, Cinematheque members and CIA I.D. holders $7, ages 25 & under $5 (with proof of age). No Cleveland Cinemas passes or discounts will be honored.
