Women's Book Club

Nativity Fast - Book Discussion

The St. Anne's Women's Book Club will have an Advent/Nativity book discussion on Sunday,

December 3, from 4-6 pm, at Debra Mattingly's house. Bring a “seasonal” food to share if you wish - we will

eat and socialize from 4 - 4:30 and will end promptly at

6 pm. We will discuss The Winter Pascha, by

Fr. Thomas Hopko.

St. Anne’s Bookstore will have copies of the book available to purchase, for those who would like to use the book for devotional reading during the Nativity Fast.

When the winter begins to make way into the Northern World, the Church of Christ begins to celebrate a "splendid three-day Pascha."

Thus Father Thomas Hopko begins the first of forty meditations for the season of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany, ending with the feast of the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple on the fortieth day after Christ's birth. In the style of his popular book for the paschal fasting season, The Lenten Spring , the author again draws on the biblical readings and liturgical hymns and verses of the season to illumine the way for believers to follow the Church's days of preparation and celebration for the Coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in human flesh. Many references are made to the writings of the saints and Church Fathers, as well as to contemporary Christian teachers and spiritual guides. All those who love the Lord's Coming will find comfort and strength, as well as enlightenment and instruction, for having passed through the Winter Pascha with this book as their companion. On Thanksgiving Day

On the Wednesday evening before Thanksgiving, there will be a service in which we pray the Akathist Hymn, "Glory to God for All Things." On Thanksgiving morning, there will be a Divine Liturgy at 9 a.m.

The Mattingly's are hosting a Thanksgiving Potluck Meal at their home in Oak Ridge.

To St. Anne's Family:

Anyone who does not have other plans to spend the day with family and friends are invited. Your family and friends are invited to share this meal with our St. Anne family at our home. Folks are welcome to start arriving any time after the morning Divine Liturgy -- probably 11:30 or so -- and can watch TV, fellowship, or cook or warm up items at our house. Appetizers will be available when they arrive; prayer and meal will begin at 2 pm .

There will be football on the TV before and after the main dinner is served. I do not know how many will be there until folks start signing up or emailing me. Last 2 years we've had 35-50 folks. Children are very welcome. Bring whatever you think should always be at "your" Thanksgiving meal.

A Stewardship Note

An email will be sent out later this week with information and a link for our 2018 Stewardship program. It gives each of us a chance to make a commitment to next year's budget. It is important for the Parish Council's budgeting and management to have a reasonable idea of the income for the coming year.
