BEST OF THE WEEK
FEBRUARY 8 - FEBRUARY 12, 2016

Every Friday this school year, "Best of the Week" will recognize
St. Edward High School's commitment to authentic instruction by
highlighting the people and programs that define the St. Ed's experience.

LESSON OF THE WEEK
THE CLASSICS COME ALIVE IN ST. EDWARD ENGLISH CLASSES
"Launched in 1981, Great Lakes Theater's in-school residency program is now one of the most successful artist-in-residence programs in the country. Using an interactive, hands on approach, a team of two specially trained actor-teachers visit schools for five consecutive days. The actors bring scripts, props, costumes...swords, daggers, and stage blood  to turn the students into an acting troupe, exploring classic literature from an actor's point of view."

This year, The Great Lakes Theatre Company will work with St. Edward students at every grade level helping them explore  Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Hamlet,  and  King Lear  in a variety of exciting and experiential ways. Each day of each lesson plan includes acting, discussion, and theater exercises. Certain days, students do all of the acting and the teachers serve as their directors; other days the actors perform for the students. Mr. Mark Urban's freshmen are currently studying  Romeo and Juliet  and he feels that the experience with The Great Lakes Theatre company helps students to contextualize the play and gets them out of their comfort zones, priming the pump to explore a style of writing and text that can intimidate some students.

Providing students with the experience to go back to The Globe Theatre and immerse themselves in Shakespeare's prose makes this interactive learning experience the lesson of the week.

TEACHER OF THE WEEK
MR. ZACH MERTENS '10
In a week that culminated with faculty from St. Edward High School and Lakewood Catholic Academy joining together to learn more about authentic real world assessment strategies, seniors in Mr. Merten's IB Math class designed a dice game using compound probability principles this week. This creative process allowed students to build and demonstrate their knowledge of probability in ways that have meaning beyond the classroom.

"If a student does well on a test of knowledge we might infer that the student could also apply that knowledge. But that is rather indirect evidence," writes Jon Mueller, "...more directly checking for the ability to apply by asking the student to use what they have learned in some meaningful way shows more direct mastery of knowledge and skill. " In crafting their dice games students not only demonstrated their knowledge, but showed mastery of the content by applying their skills.

Mr. Merten's hands-on approach to math applications and assessment make him this week's Teacher of the Week!

THE WOW FACTOR!
THE LENTEN SACRIFICE - 1-1-1 CHALLENGE
On Wednesday, the St. Edward Community came together for Ash Wednesday Mass, and Fr. Tim Roth of St. Angela Merici Parish reminded us that Lent is not just a time to give something up, it's a time to experience personal growth.

St. Edward Theology teacher Mr. Jurell Sison's writings on "How Lent Can Save Your Life" were featured this week on the lifeteen.com blog.  Mr. Sison subscribes to the 1-1-1 Plan during Lent - give up 1 thing; pick up 1 thing; and, focus on 1 sin.

Sison writes, " This Lent, I pray that we can take our Lenten sacrifices seriously - myself included. When we do, we will not only find ourselves stronger and more resilient in the face of temptation but we will also discover the full meaning of a Lent that leads to resurrection."  Read his full blog post.

As we navigate the 40 Days of Lent, may you find the strength to experience personal growth, and allow the Lenten season to change your life.
