Join us on the St. Francis path
"How happy we are when we serve the Lord!
Saint Francis of Assisi
Welcome
" New Year, New Promise with
St. Francis of Assisi
"

January resolutions fade quickly, except in a community with a Franciscan spirit that welcomes the New Year with St. Francis of Assisi's Peace Prayer. We say the prayer every day, students, staff, and faculty alike. And that second week of January, when school starts and my fresh outlook wanes, it's funny how the Prayer of St. Francis lights up winter's ordinary time. The words twist with new meaning, helping us make peace with the past and look forward with hope.

For St. Francis students, January begins a clean academic slate. Senior girls go on the four-day Kairos Senior Retreat next week, an exemplary off-site St. Francis experience that centers our young people. And, the St. Francis High School community welcomes YOU this month, the incoming Class of 2022. We will be mailing Decision Letters today and begin introducing your student and family to the promise of new beginnings at St. Francis High School.

This past Wednesday, January 10, marked our first Spartan Shadow Day of 2018. Call or visit online to register your 7th or 8th grader for this day or a future date. I also welcome parents of incoming freshmen, transfer students, and middle school students for coffee and a tour while school is in session. Tuesday Tours are 9:00-10:00 a.m. or any other convenient time. I'd like to note that we continue to receive calls for admission even though the Entrance Exam has passed. If you have questions about the admissions process, you may contact me directly (630) 668-5800 x1120 to discuss your situation. I'm happy to help your student start fresh at St. Francis High School. Happy New Year!

"I Am St. Francis"
The Recent Graduates' Perspective: 5 Questions for Class of 2017 Alumni Lily Rodriguez (University of Notre Dame) and Shane Walker (Murray State University)

1.  What activities/clubs/athletics were you involved in at SFHS? What college do you attend? What activities are you involved in now at college?

Lily: At St. Francis, I was involved in Student Ministry Team, Band, Math Team, and JV Softball.  I currently attend the University of Notre Dame and am a piccolo player in the Marching Band there.
Shane: I was a part of the Football, Basketball, and Baseball teams at St. Francis along with being on the Worship Team and an Alter Server during our school Masses. I currently attend Murray State University where I play football.

2.  What is your current major? What do you hope to accomplish after graduating?

Lily: For my major, I am deciding between Civil and Environmental Engineering.  After graduating, I hope to serve others by using my engineering degree to improve the quality of life for people living in impoverished communities.
Shane: My current major is Exercise Science. After graduating, I plan to earn my master's degree and become a strength and conditioning coach for a university football team.

3.  How did St. Francis prepare you academically for your university studies?

Lily: I would say that my classes at St. Francis definitely prepared me for my college courses by teaching me to work hard and manage time. One example would be the senior research paper I wrote in Ms. Pratscher's English class.  After working on and writing that paper in high school, I have felt very prepared to write papers and essays in college.
Shane: Academically, the quality of general papers and research papers that St. Francis English department expects from each student dramatically showed in my college experience. No matter the class, you had to write papers, and I found every paper to be easy and completed each one without any problems. Also, the St. Francis teachers are never out of reach. Recently, I needed to write a short play for my theatre class and remembered during one of my classes at St. Francis that our teacher had a great template I could use to complete the assignment. I e-mailed the St. Francis teacher, and within an hour she had e-mailed me back with the template I needed to complete my own college assignment.

4.  What is your favorite memory during your time at SFHS? Or what do you appreciate the most about your time at SFHS?

Lily: My favorite memory from St. Francis is Kairos.  The time spent in prayer and the lessons that I learned on that retreat senior year really helped me to learn a lot about myself and to strengthen my relationship with God, which has really benefited me throughout my first semester of college.
Shane: What I appreciated the most at St. Francis was the love and the concern each teacher had for the well-being of every student. Teachers would approach struggling students and help as much as possible, whether it would be sitting down and going over a test or simply having an open door for the student to allow the teacher to help with personal issues.

5.  You recently came back to the Varsity Boys Basketball game. Why? What one word describes your feeling toward St. Francis?

Lily: I came back to visit St. Francis for the people. There are many classmates that are still some of my closest friends today, and there are also many teachers with whom I formed relationships and I still want to keep in touch. I AM ...GRATEFUL.
Shane: I came back to the boys' basketball game for many reasons. My brother, Bryce Walker, currently plays for the varsity basketball team. I also visited because St. Francis reached out to young alumni inviting us to come to the game and see our old classmates. I also wanted to support my friends that are on the team and still playing for St. Francis.  I AM ...GRATEFUL.

A Parent's Guide to Opportunity in SFHS Business & Technology

Did you know St. Francis High School offers the largest Business & Technology Department of any Catholic high school in the diocese? These classes benefit students by exposing them to life skills as well as careers and college majors. They also help to balance course loads with foundational and honors-level classes that appeal to individual learners and colleges. The department offers exceptional college prep experiences, with alumni regularly returning to describe the benefits of the specialized and fundamental instruction. The classes also provide powerful opportunities to analyze, compare, evaluate, problem solve, and respect others' opinions. Our Microsoft technology enhances the impact of Business & Technology coursework. Some students also choose to take Chinese to complement individual college and career goals. Here's a department overview to help parents keep pace with SFHS students.

Department Overview: The Department educates with core electives that provide opportunities to augment career interest and life-long living skills. Business students learn how organizations create, manage, market, finance, and track value.  Technology students prepare to understand and use technology for personal development, career enhancement, and college preparation. The Department's hands-on approach allows students to deepen knowledge and exposure as they develop creativity, planning, evaluation, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication. The Business & Technology Department faculty has 130 years of experience in education, including 101 years of experience educating at St. Francis High School.

Department Chair, Mike Lynch '77: "I teach students everything that will be practical and useful in their life. All our teachers have a real-life, practical application because everyone came from the public sector. It's invaluable, what everyone in the department adds, because everything is real life. We use real examples every day; it's just not reading from a book. We also expose kids to possible career choices. Kids say all the time that our classes are so beneficial because they helped them plan their career path. These are elective classes, meaning the kids have to choose to take them. This semester I have over 165 students--they could be taking other classes, but they see the benefits. Parents say their kids are talking to them about budgeting, stocks, and even giving them portfolio advice. Even as a teacher, it's so enjoyable to see the kids apply what they are learning."

  SPOTLIGHTING BUSINESS: Classes Offered-- ·
  • Accounting I
  • Honors Accounting II
  • Business Communications
  • Business Law
  • Consumer Education
  • Marketing Management
  • Economics, Honors Economics (S.S. Credit)

Teacher Joe Duffy: "I teach Accounting, Business Law, and Economics. The whole point is that we want to give our students real world experiences and help them take advantage of the teachers' experiences in the corporate world. I share with them not just the textbook information but also the idea and understanding of what it is like to work in business, what to expect in college, and how to be prepared to exit college and do the work. In Accounting, we also discuss Business ethics. We talk about the ethical aspects of Arthur Andersen and Enron and the impact this has on the real world as far as incomes, pension, and livelihood. In Economics, we talk about personal budgeting, among many other topics. For example, students get out of college and get this much money - now we need to buy food, clothes, and break down rental apartment costs, understanding what it's like to do a lease; plus elements such as food, clothing, and transportation. We go through the whole process and discuss the difference between needs and wants and discretionary income. I have the benefit of not just my business experience but parental experience with my four adult children. I leverage those experiences and share. Business Law is different in the practicality/application, but we still look at case law. Presentations include learning about court cases and the legal ramifications. We go beyond law and get into everyday issues in the world today.

Alum Isabel B., '17: All the teachers in the Business Department are willing to help you understand everything down to the smallest detail. This was very helpful to me as I just completed my first semester of college. The business classes at St. Francis prepared me to excel in college and will help me succeed later in my career.

Student Danny V., '19: "Honors Economics has been so helpful. My dad is an accountant, and I have great conversations with him now. I want to go into Finance, and this is preparing me for that career. I really enjoyed the full-semester project where we build a life. Mr. Lynch gives us a family and a job, income level and so on, and you become these people. We bought a house, a car, got insurance, and found a career. It's also given me perspective, and I very much appreciate what my parents do for me!"

Student Tara J., '19: " I love our Business Department. We have a wide variety of classes and opportunities available. I've learned I want to go into business eventually and more about how the real world operates."

Student Matt C., '18: "Consumer Education was amazing. I especially liked the Stock Market game because we participated in a real-life experience, having to take risks to make money. I would definitely recommend any business class. Mr. Lynch is a great teacher, and I learned so much."

SPOTLIGHTING TECHNOLOGY: Classes Offered-- ·
  • Digital Literacy
  • Microsoft Office
  • Honors Programming in JAVA
  • Visual Basic
  • Windows Application Development
  • Computer Hardware Maintenance
  • Computer Lab Aide (no credit)

Teacher & Technology Integration Specialist Colleen Kaplan: "Freshmen students are required to take a Digital Literacy class because it allows all freshmen to begin school on the same page. We do a lot with organization and executive functioning as well as computers and digital literacy. We provide our students phenomenal computer technology, but we also give them the tools to use it. Skills include basics, such as how to write an outline, report, resume and how to use Excel. We also cover basic coding and photo, video, and website editing. We try to expose them to a little bit of everything. Students then also enjoy another unit with the Guidance Department that uses the Naviance computer program which focuses on career exploration. At the beginning of the unit, 90% of students want to be doctor, teacher, lawyer or something their parents do. Then students go into Naviance. They take multiple intelligence tests that map their personalized learning profile and expose them to new careers and one that especially suits them. Taking it further, we then connect the students to people in those careers.  Wealth managers, sports broadcasting and journalism, veterinarian technicians, music therapy - kids are connected as freshmen. It's about broadening their horizons. We reformat the curriculum regularly to meet the growing college-preparatory demands of our students. We make it as relevant as possible and are constantly evolving based on student need. Also we discuss cyber-bullying and Internet privacy and having a digital footprint and data mining. The students need to know they will have a profile that stays with them."

Student Ryne P., '18: "I've taken Economics, Visual Basic, Honors Java, and Computer Hardware. Honors Java was my favorite because it was a very challenging course that pushed me to learn new things and improve skills that I need for my desired career path. St. Francis is helping me to pursue a career in technology by offering a multitude of classes along with integrating technology into every class with the Surface Pro."

A Sample of Experiences that Complement the Department
Business Club: 36 members that meet every week and discuss/work on Capsim Simulation and CapsimCore.  The simulation gets students excited about business by exposing them to concepts and terminology in a fun and engaging simulated environment. The simulation allows students to compete against other schools and puts the students in charge of running a company - hiring, salaries, etc. At the start of the simulation, each company in the "industry" will begin at the exact same financial position. At the end of each round, the simulation will process, and students will be able to see how the company performed against the competition. Should you sell bonds? Should you hire? Introduce new products? Expand production?
  • Although 79 students applied, only 36 can participate (based upon priority to seniors and number of classes because you have to understand business, marketing, etc.)
  • The teams of three (12 teams total) meet Tuesdays after school and participate in graduate level exercises.
Statewide Internet Stock Market Investment Game with other high schools:  St. Francis High School has won the regional title six of the last nine years. In 2016-2017, the St. Francis Team of student stock-traders won the regional title with a 456% return on investment.

In partnership with Microsoft, "Start-Up" Day: Lock-in field trip where students hear presentations from entrepreneurs in the Chicagoland area, develop business plans, and then pitch the plans to business leaders in a "Shark Tank" style environment.

SFHS Teams with Kaplan to Offer ACT Prep
Kaplan Test Prep  and SFHS team up to provide ACT prep courses on the St. Francis campus. As part of the arrangement, St. Francis students may register for free Kaplan online prep, as well. "The Kaplan courses start after the Activity Period at 3:15 p.m.  We believe this course benefits our students by providing convenient after-school test prep on our campus through a nationally known, research-based provider," explains Trudy Rigney, SFHS Director of Guidance. "We appreciate the significant course discount and the opportunity for student's with financial need to obtain course scholarships to further reduce the total cost of the course and make it more affordable."

Microsoft has chosen St. Francis High School as their Showcase School of the Month.

Only 34 schools in the United States hold the distinction of being a Showcase School in the United States, with St. Francis being one of two in Illinois. We reprint the following article from U.S. MIE Expert and Showcase School, Microsoft's online newsletter that highlights the award. Microsoft chose St. Francis among other Microsoft Showcase Schools, the distinction Microsoft awards select schools for excellence in integrating technology into the curriculum and classroom.

The Mobile Learning Initiative at St. Francis High School in Wheaton, Illinois is led by the school leadership team and the IT staff . Their one-to-one program is one of a kind in the Chicagoland area, as all 730 students and 80 faculty and staff are using Surface Pro devices and Office 365 for Education, with a heavy emphasis on OneNote Classroom Notebooks. 98% of students use Class Notebooks in more than half their classes last school year! With this background, IT Director, Jeff Gerdeman , and Technology Integration Specialist, Colleen Kaplan , often act as Microsoft and OneNote "evangelists," speaking at educational and technology conferences about their school's path to becoming one-to-one and the benefits of working in a Microsoft-based ecosystem.

What especially sets them apart is their unique partnership with the local Microsoft Store in Oak Brook Illinois. Business Specialist, Denton Green , and Community Development Specialist, Megan Wright , have been key in supporting and championing the Mobile Learning Initiative (MLI) at St. Francis High School and helping them earn the distinction of being a Microsoft Showcase School. With the help of the Oak Brook Microsoft Store, St. Francis High School hosts quarterly "Digital Classroom Days" where teachers and administrators from local area schools looking to make the move to a one-to-one environment (or modify their existing one) are able to tour the building, observe classrooms in session, and connect with teachers and students to discuss what a successful Microsoft-based one-to-one program really looks like. Additionally, this partnership has provided St. Francis High School opportunities to host events unique to Microsoft stores on the school's campus. Teacher training and professional development, coding and entrepreneurship camps, Hour of Code events, and an event called "Startup Day" have all been great examples of a successful partnership between St. Francis High School and the Oak Brook Microsoft Store.
