The Weekly Word

The lazy, hazy days of summer are drawing to an end.  The heat will remain - this is Texas after all! - but fall and its activities will begin to draw our attention.  Like football.  On August 28 th we will once again welcome the UMHB football team to our church. What a joyous day for us!  I love seeing the pews and chairs filled with these vibrant, young adults!  There are many ways to be involved and all hands are needed.  Please see the notice below and help out as you are able.

August 28 th will also be the return of Fr. Brad from his sabbatical.  He will be refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to lead us as we build the Kingdom of God here in Temple, TX!  The weeks have gone by quickly.  I thank all of you for helping keep the "ship afloat" during his absence.  Special thanks to Fr. John for being our interim priest.  His last Sunday with us will be Sunday, August 21 st .  Please give him your thanks for a job well done.  Please also thank Frances Svatek, our parish administrator.  She was the go-to person whenever there was a question or a problem.  Where would we be without her?!

We just completed Backpack Buddies so that means school will soon be starting.  Next around the corner is the Weekend Nutrition Ministry Backpack program. The tentative first Wednesday is August 31 st .  If the date changes I will let you know.  This program provides food for over the weekend for food-insecure school children.  Please see the description below for more information.

In September, Tuesday Solace returns as does our Children's Chapel.  There is a need for teachers. If you feel this is something you cannot do, please pray that God leads teachers to this important ministry of St. Francis.  We are caught in that Catch-22 that many churches find themselves in:  wanting more young people and children, but not having the activities that attract and keep them because we don't have the enough young people and children to support them!

I would remind all of us to find activities that bring us closer to God, develop spiritually and in community with each other and others. Church is not a building. Church is people.  When we draw closer to each other and others, we draw closer to Jesus.  The Cedarbrake Retreat Center, in Belton, offers reflection days and weekend retreat programs in a naturally wooded area.  Camp Allen, in Navasota, provides several retreat opportunities that include a Gramps Camp (9/23 - 10/2), a Fishers of Men Retreat (9/30 - 10/2), Episcopal Women's Retreat (10/14 - 10/16) and an Advent Retreat (12/2 - 12/4).  Camp Allen is the Episcopal Diocese of Texas retreat center and a beautiful place to nourish and refresh your soul.  I will be putting registration information about these activities in the weeks to come and on our Facebook page.

Peace be with you,
Deacon Tamara

General Announcements
ALICE ADAMS

It is with a heavy and sad heart that I let you know that our beloved sister in Christ, Alice Adams, went to her eternal life on Saturday, August 6th.  Please pray for the repose of her soul, and care and comfort for her family and friends.  Services are pending, but they will most likely not take place for several weeks.  Of course, you will be notified when they are scheduled.  Until then, I encourage you to share your love and remembrances of Alice with each other.  This is a time of joy and sorrow, laughter and tears.

May her soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Blessings and Love,
Deacon Tamara

PARISH HALL KITCHEN

It has been brought to our attention that some of the kitchen drawers show the presence of some unwanted visitors.  Pest control is on the job, but to see if their efforts are paying off we need some volunteers willing to clean out the drawers and the cabinets. Not all the drawers and cabinets have "presents," but all should be checked and cleaned as needed.  This will let us continue to monitor the situation and keep our kitchen pest free!  Please let Frances know this week if you can help out.  Thank you!  Deacon Tamara

Upcoming Events
CRU SUNDAY,  AUGUST 28

Wow!  This past year has flown by and now we are gearing up for school days, football games, cooler weather (?), rally day, and so many more exciting things.
Last year's Cru Sunday was another amazing team effort!  So many of you contributed in numerous ways to help make the UMHB football team and staff feel a part of our church family.  The vestry with the support of many of you has decided to initiate the 4 th Annual Cru Sunday and we need everyone's help.

Last August many of us worried that we would not have enough food to feed all the players; instead we fed them, the women's shelter and others.  The players were blessed with a meaningful church service, a delicious meal, take home bags of cookies and brownies, and a pocket cross to carry with them through the season.  We will start signing up for various duties this Sunday, August 7th.

The following is a draft of committees and volunteers. If you are willing to help on one or more of these committees, please contact the person listed below.
  • Church - set up (chairs)
  • Nursery - we may need one extra volunteer
  • Tables/Chairs - Chris Sedonic
  • Decorations/plates/silverware - Karen Fredenburg
  • Drinks - Chris Sedonic
  • Hospitality
  • Parking - Mike Ludlow
  • Pocket Crosses - Gift shop board
Chip Schaefer will once again be providing the meat, and we, of course, hope each of you will sign up to bring one on more dishes.  The signup sheet will be in the Narthex.  Please bring your dishes in the tin pans provided next to the signup sheet.  God Bless you

GOD'S PURPOSE FOR YOU,
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 8, CEDARBRAKE RETREAT CENTER

Sometimes in life, it is difficult to embrace God's love. We oftentimes fall into the belief that we have little value or purpose in life. Yet, scripture tells us that we are "fearfully and wonderfully made" and that God cares deeply about the most intimate details of our lives. So if you feel like there seems to be something missing in your life, join us in taking the next step in becoming the person God is calling you to be. This retreat will be led by Cheryl "Max" Maxwell. Cost is $35 and includes lunch.

To Register: www.cedarbrake.org or call 254-780-2436.
