The Weekly Word
Why? What Does This Have to Do with Jesus?
This question can easily fade from our consciousness, when we are busy with the demands of everyday life.  This same question can easily fade from our consciousness when we are involved in church life, as well.  For example, if parish event is being planned and/or executed, it's important that we identify the Why? of the event. Whether it's making sack meals, volunteering at the Gift Shop, working in St. Francis' gardens, or serving as a vestry member, clergy member, layreader, or altar guild member or participation in any ministry of St. Francis Church, it would do us well to ask ourselves Why?  What does this have to do with Jesus?

It would be appropriate for the following prayer to be prayed before every act of participation in all of our ministries, and I encourage all ministry leaders to adopt this practice for their group..

Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings with Your most gracious favor, and further us with Your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in You, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally by Your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fr. Brad

Vestry Election Process Based on Prayerful Discernment
The process by which vestry members are elected at St. Francis is a process of Prayerful Discernment by those who feel they may be called to this ministry of church leadership.

The process takes place as follows:
Discernment Session - Sunday November 20 at Noon
o    Any who feel they might be called to the ministry of vestry member, including former vestry members, are strongly urged to attend this session led by the Rector (Fr. Brad) and Acting Senior Warden (Chris Sedonic) in which the responsibilities and expectations of vestry members are presented.
o    At the end of the session, each attendee will be given a nomination form on which she/he may indicate if she/he would like to nominate herself/himself to run in the vestry election. This form may be returned within 2 weeks to the church office Attn: Senior Warden, giving each attendee time for meaningful discernment, after having attended the Discernment Session.
o    Because attendance at this session is required for one to be included in the regular
nominations, any who wish to attend but are unable to do so should contact the Rector or Acting Senior Warden prior to the December 6
th session to make other arrangements. In other words, everyone will be given an opportunity to participate in this process.
o    While anyone may encourage another to run in the vestry election, nominations will only be accepted from the individual seeking election.
o    The purpose is to ensure that only those who are willing to commit themselves to this ministry are nominated.
Floor Nominations
o    Self-Nominations will be allowed from the floor during the Annual Parish Meeting.
Project Angel Tree
St. Francis will be participating in Project Angel Tree sponsoring 25 children in our local area. Each child will be given three gifts, that includes; clothing, toy, and Christian gift.
We need "Angels" to assist in getting the gifts to these children.

We need "Shopping Angels" to purchase gifts. This can be done individually, buying all three gifts to your assigned child, or a team of "Angels" working together to purchase the three gifts to your assigned child.

We need "Wrapping Angels" to wrap all the gifts. We will hold a Wrapping Party the weekend of December 10-11.

We need "Delivery Angels" to deliver the gifts to the children's homes. Our "Angels" will deliver the gifts to the children the weekend of December 17-18.

Angel Sign-Up sheet will be in the Narthex and if you are a "Shopping Angel," please see The Project Angel Tree Coordinator, Chris Sedonic, for details .
St. Francis Gift Shop Opportunities
Volunteers are needed to help extend the St. Francis Gift Shop hours during the month of December.  This is the only month each year that we strive to be open each business day.  In order to facilitate this, we are asking for your help in staffing our shop.

We will maintain our regular hours on Thursday and Friday from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm and on Saturdays from 10:30 am until 2 pm with our regular volunteers.

Our extended hours for the Christmas season in December, will be Monday through Wednesday from 10:30 am until 4:00 pm.  An experienced angel volunteer or board member will be working beside you and no prior experience is necessary.  You can volunteer to assist with a shift for as little as 2 hrs. or the entire day.

You may discover the immense satisfaction of working with our Gift Shop Angels and may want to volunteer on a regular basis in the future.  Volunteers are eligible to receive a 15% discount on your Christmas shopping needs.  St. Francis Gift Shop supports the mission of our church and is completely managed by volunteers.

A sign-up sheet will be available Sunday, in the Narthex, or contact Judy Ludlow,, or any Board member. Thank you for your consideration of helping us to extend our shopping hours during December.

Upcoming Events

Wednesday, December 21

Back by popular demand!  I was approached by several folks telling me how much they enjoyed doing the hot meal for Feed My Sheep last December and could we do it again?  Well of course we can!  There were a limited number of dates available, none on Saturday and December 21st was date that seemed the best.  It is understood that many have pesky day jobs and will not be available on Wednesday to help serve, but dishes can be made ahead of time and heated on the actual day.  Details will be forthcoming right after Thanksgiving.  Grace and Peace, Deacon Tamara

The Daughters of the King have taken over the Shoebox Ministry, benefiting the Temple women's shelter.  We will be collecting items to go into shoeboxes.  What will be needed are basic toiletries, such as shampoos, soaps, razors, deodorant, facecloths, toothbrushes and paste, combs and brushes.  We also require empty shoe boxes.  These items can be left in the parlor on Sundays and will be collected and packed on Dec. 4th .  If you have any questions regarding this, please call Martha Hoyt  Thank you.

Ongoing Ministries
Tuesday Solace: Tuesday Solace is a free service supporting families affected by Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia and takes place from 1:00 -4:00pm at the Parish Hall. Allowing caregivers respite time, the program provides music and singing, fun, social activities, and loving care to the participants.

Weekend Nutritional Backpack Ministry: Each Wednesday morning at 9:00am volunteers gather at CTLC (Churches Touching Lives for Christ) to fill 400 backpacks for the WNB Ministry. CTLC is located at 702 West Avenue G, Temple TX

Feed My Sheep Sack Meals (FMS) : On the 2nd Sunday of each month, all are invited to gather in the Parish at 9:30 to prepare 200 sack lunches for our neighbors who have limited access to food. The lunches are delivered after the 10:30 service to Feed My Sheep by those who may wish to volunteer. Our next schedule sack meal preparation is Sunday, December 11.  To learn how to get involved, please see Deacon Tamara.
Churches Touching Lives for Christ (CTLC) :  The collection item for November 2016 is Chilli. Even though the weather is still warm, it will turn colder and a bowl of chili can hit the spot!  It is also time for our annual Winter Coat Closet Cleanout!  If you have gently used coats, jackets, sweaters, or sweatshirts that you no longer wear, then please donate them to CTLC.Items may be brought to the narthex on Sunday or to the Church Office during weekdays.
