The Weekly Word

I truly enjoyed the "welcome back" celebration this past Sunday, and I certainly am grateful for the work of so many of you during my absence.  Thank you all for allowing me to be away in the peaceful knowledge that all would be well with the ministries of St. Francis.

In the Gospel lesson for this week, Jesus tells His listeners that none of them can be His disciple unless they give up all their possessions.  Wow!  In a capitalist society such as ours, this mandate may strike many of us in an uncomfortable way.  Yes, we do love Jesus...but what are we willing to give up in order to be a true disciple?  Jesus' statement illustrates the ultimate tension that exists between being a child of the world and a child of God.  And because we are both of these things, we must strive to balance the two.  In other words, how do we live in the world and not become of the world ?  Perhaps we would do well to reflect on that question in our prayers for the week ahead.  I believe the answer has to come through prayer, for I am convinced that there is little chance that we will find the answer without God's compassionate help.

Fr. Brad

General Announcements

At a time when the shelters are refusing goods (they are overloaded), The Diocese of Louisiana is asking for gift cards to Wal-mart, Home Depot, Target, etc. right now. Over $10,000 in gift cards were given out in less than 48 hours to people in emergency shelters in Baton Rouge and to homeowners, mostly in Denham Springs and West Feliciana Parish, both hard-hit. Denham Springs is 90% flooded and the parish church there is severely damaged along with every other building on their property.
Gift Cards can be given to Deacon Tamara for mailing or you can mail them directly to:
