Quote of the Week. . .

It's important that those affected by these devastating storms know that, even if the path to recovery feels like a road that goes on forever, we're with them for the long haul.
                                                               --George H.W. Bush

[I]n a free society, some are guilty, but all are responsible.
                                                                           --Abraham Joshua Heschel

Food for Thought. . .

Given the horrific shooting in Las Vegas this past week, there is little to say.  Our prayers are with those who have died, their loved ones, and the over 500 individuals who were wounded and for whom we pray for healing.  Further, we pray for the leaders of our country and for ourselves that we would finally be moved to action to pass sensible gun safety legislation.  Yes, may we not only pray, but may we act for a safer and saner world.  As Steve Israel points out in his  op-ed, the response needs to change.  Two modified prayers from our funeral rite:

Father of all, we pray to you for all those who have died and for all those whom we love but see no longer. Grant to them eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our  understanding: Deal graciously with all those   in their  grief.   Surround them  with your love, that they  may not be  overwhelmed by their  loss, but have confidence in your  goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through  Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
