Dear People of St. George's,

Christian author and artist Makoto Fujimura writes, "The Japanese word kaimamiru flows out of the art of garden design. It means, literally, to "see between." If stalks of bamboo are set up as a fence, what is most desirable is that the fence and garden be built so that the most beautiful and intriguing experience comes from seeing in between."

Jesus will tell us this Sunday in the Gospel lesson to love our enemies.  You could probably spend the rest of your life working on perfecting only that piece of the Gospel.  There is also no doubt that Jesus sees our sin, but if I read the Gospel right, he must also see us in a way that is in between.  Our sins work like a mask or a costume, covering up who God made us to be, hiding the real us from view.  But like any mask or costume, there are gaps, and I wonder, is is through those gaps that Christ sees us?  Does he wish we would be willing to make our true selves more visible?

When we look at our neighbor, friend or foe, political ally or opponent, do we see them as they are presenting themselves to us, fully clad in mask and costume, or do we see in between?  If Fujimura is right, the most beautiful ad intriguing experience would be to see in between, and I suspect that would also be the right way to see towards reconciliation.

God bless you!

Fr. Ryan+

Good Works Workday Report

The Outreach Committee extends many thanks to Heidi and Ed Brocklesby, Jim Burns, Steve Drabkowski, Roland Noreika, Denny Smyth, and Toneh Williams for volunteering for Good Works last Saturday.  They worked at Stephanie's house and really accomplished a lot, including installing dry wall, lights, and shower stall in the bathroom; replacing a basement window and bulkhead entrance; installing door sweeps on the front and back door to stop drafts; and organizing the kitchen.

Good Works, Inc. brings helping hands and the message of God's love to low-income homeowners with the help of volunteers like us,  a few hours of our time and effort can make a big difference.

Saturday, May 13, 2017.
Please mark your calendars and consider being part of the team that day.
