The Session Call to Sabbath During Augustsabbath
During the month of August the Session believes the Lord is leading St. Giles to a month of Sabbath.  Rest and sabbath are both a gift and command of God and we believe the Lord graciously is calling us to set aside the month of August to embrace the Sabbath principle as a church.  In light of this, during August we are radically minimizing events on the church calendar and formally are planning only our Sunday morning worship service.
Additionally,  for those Sundays during our church-wide Sabbath, we will be moving the morning worship service to 10 am.  Why the 10 am move?  We believe that with church ending at 11:30 am it will be easier for church friends and families to go lunch together after church.  The St. Giles Sabbath is being extended to Sunday evenings (no youth, no Sunday night prayer) and on Sunday mornings besides worship service we are planning only to have the adult class which meets in the Fellowship Hall.  Worship Connection also will not be meeting during August and we will all be together in the sanctuary.  The "sabbath" Sunday morning schedule will begin on Sunday August 6th and extend through Labor Day weekend and thus Sunday, September 3rd.
We believe that the Lord will use this month of Sabbath to refresh St. Giles spiritually and that we'll enter the fall ministry with renewed strength, joy, and fullness in the Holy Spirit.  We encourage you all to embrace the calling to Sabbath and review your personal commitments and schedules and, when and where possible, do less rather than more.  We are doing this as a church to model the prophetic message and gift of Sabbath to a world (and often a Church) which is far too busy and which measures it's value on how much it can produce.  We hope each of you will slow down, rejoice more, and rest in the rest which God gives.  We hope you will laugh more, drink in beauty more, and find yourself more aware of God's Presence as life is not quite as pushed.  And, we also hope, that friends at St. Giles will share this time together as you enjoy cook-outs, family play dates, and even playing golf with one another!
Life is a gift, not a job.  We ultimately become still more productive for the Lord - and happier in the process - as we honor God's calling to Sabbath and rest in the gifts He surrounds us with.  Though the staff and elders will be joining in the call to Sabbath, we still will be available to minister to you and the church office will be open.  But, other than the Sunday morning service and the adult Sunday School class, we are not planning any formal ministry from August 1 through Labor Day weekend.

August 1 - Sept. 3rd
* No children or youth Sunday School
* Adult Sunday School at 9am
* Worship Connection will not meet
* Worship Service 10 am - 11:30
* No evening children, youth or adult prayer meetings
"There remains, therefore, a Sabbath rest for the people of God."  (Hebrews 4:9)

St. Giles Men's Retreat

This year's men's retreat is going to be a big deal.  First of all,
Dr. Ken Boa is going to be our speaker and it's worth checking out his bio.  Hey, it's a gift from the Lord that we got a guy like Ken.  Wow!  The retreat is going to be held this year at the Montreat Conference Center in Montreat, NC. Hey, the mountains in early November is pretty cool.
We're going to be focusing on meat and potatoes stuff like the Bible, discipleship, and mentoring.   That's where it's at for most of us men, right?  We're just figuring out how to live right, walk with God, and bring honor to Him.  Lyle Helmick who partnered with Nate for 12 years of ministry is going to be our worship leader.  Lyle is gifted, anointed, and a great guy.  You'll love him.  Finally, the cost is pretty cheap for what you get: $150.  So here's the lowdown:
Dates: November 10-12, 2017
Location: Montreat Conference Center
Speaker: Dr. Ken Boa
Worship Leader: Lyle Helmick
Cost: $150 (includes meals and lodging)

Abraham and The Journey of Faith
Genesis Part 1
During the next two years - in three different sections - Nate will be preaching through the Book of Genesis.  The book of "Beginnings" (Genesis means "beginnings") is a story filled with foundational truth about God and life.  At the center of that story is Abraham, the man of faith.  It was over the decades that Abraham learned faith and increasingly leaned into God.  We are each on the same journey and faith is crucial for the Scriptures tell us that "without faith it is impossible to please God" (Hebrews 11:6) and that faith is at the very root of our salvation in Christ for "it is by grace you have been saved - through faith" (Ephesians 2:8).

Throughout the summer months, Nate will begin the story of "Beginnings" as we begin our journey into Abraham and The Story of Faith.

  • Sunday School - This summer we are continuing our study of the "Thread" of God's plan through Scripture. Last Sunday we looked at King Solomon and how, while he walked faithfully with God early in his life, his heart strayed from the Lord later in his life. Just like Solomon, our motivation for obedience to Christ ought to be our love for Him as well (John 14:23-24). Next Sunday we will look at how Solomon's disobedience led to disaster in Israel under the kingship of his son, Rehoboam.
  • Evangelism in Uptown - On Sunday, July 9 from 6:00pm-8:00pm, we will be heading to Romare Bearden Park in Uptown to pray for people and share the Gospel with them. Many thanks to Kenan Kovaskcitz and Rebecca Wong for organizing this event! If you went on any of our past few mission trips, you won't want to miss this chance to encourage people in the Lord in our own city! More details will be shared ASAP.

The Prophetic Stream of St. Giles
Can you accurately recall those great words from the Lord that we hear spoken in church by members or on occasion visitors? Me neither. Well, now you can read them all on our very own St. Giles on-line book. The link to this book is found on the St Giles website homepage ( or click here:  The Prophetic Stream . It not only contains these words you've heard but much more. If you have a word, vision, dream, etc that you think is not just for you but the whole of St Giles then please let us know. Your Prophetic Stream Team: Emma Tregidga, Jennifer Houston, Gerry Edwards and Tim Burns. To submit a prophetic impression, email the team at

St. Giles will partner with Love Life Charlotte on these up and coming dates:

What is "The Session"?  You may be new to the church or just a little unsure as to who that vague, mysterious group really are.  No mystery!  The Session is the group of leaders who have final responsibility for the "oversight" of St. Giles. Composed of Nate, and the active "ruling elders", the Session meets twice a month to provide oversight, leadership, and prayer for the body.  And, as leaders in the church the Session members are both "servant leaders" and "shepherd leaders".  It's their calling to care for you, pray for you, and serve you. If you have needs, questions, or concerns each member of the Session is available to you and your family.
Members of the St. Giles Session
Pastor and Teaching Elder Nate Atwood, Moderator (leader)
Elder Tim Carey, Clerk of Session (administrative organizer)
Elder Daniel Burns
Elder Larry Gregory
Elder Chris Houston
Elder Chris Boyd
Elder Bob Pearson
In addition to the elders listed above, St. Giles is rich in extended leadership. We have 26 other elders who have served on the Session in the past and who remain as elders in the body. Click here for a list of these elders: ELDERS.  While not officially charged with "oversight" of the church which the Session has, our many elders are active in the life of the church as shepherd and servant leaders. They continue to be available to both you and the church to encourage, guide, serve, comfort, and pray for.
The bottom line is that we are all surrounded by shepherds who are "keeping watch" over the flock.

  Let God write through you...

We are looking for devotional writers, so if something percolates in you from the sermon series, or you have something edifying from the LORD to share, we'd like to hear from you!

Writer's Workshop Update
June 12, 2017
Dearest St Giles,
What words can I use to express my love for you, my Church Family? Because I cannot find those words to express my gratitude for your welcome, admiration for your love for one another, and wonder at how Christ is embodied in the whole of you, I believe I am "filled with [that] inexpressible and glorious joy" that comes when we actually touch God in a place.
When I visit St. Giles, my soul is fulfilled by your worship, your seasoned wisdom, and your wide-open joy. St. Giles Church is where I come to be whole again. Thank you, Church family, Bride of Christ, Home of Holy Altars, for embracing me, an outsider, with your healing love.
I wonder if you know that in your midst is the Glory of God? "All mine are Yours and Yours are mine, and I am glorified in them." (John 17:10) Yes, the Glory of God is within your walls!
May God's Presence continue to be with each of you and may He pour over you His grace, peace, provision, and His inexpressible and glorious joy!
Until I visit again - God Bless St. Giles and thank you for your Holy Hospitality - Meredith Bunting

Meredith lives in Virginia Beach and spoke at our recent Writers' Workshop, leaving us much to ponder regarding God's glory. She is a part of our devotional team, encouraging others to speak / write a word in season to someone who may be weary. A few of us are considering forming a Spiritual Writers' Group and getting together once every few months (perhaps for breakfast on a Saturday), to encourage one another to share what God may want to give through us. Anyone interested could email
