 Reformation 500 Sunday Luncheon

Reformation 500
St. James Congregational Luncheon
Sunday, October 29, 2017
12 noon

In celebration of the historic 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, St. James will be hosting a congregational luncheon following the 11:00 service on October 29th, 2017.  Our menu will consist of German foods and beverages that Martin and Katie Luther would have enjoyed 500 years ago!  (The menu will accommodate children with hot dogs and German cheese noodles). We encourage you to make a reservation for this event by Sunday, October 15 so that we can more accurately plan our meal.  A sign-up sheet will be provided in the Community Room.  You may also call the church office to make a reservation if you cannot access the signup sheet.

This will be a "no-ticket" event, but a FREE WILL offering will be collected and forwarded to Lutheran World Relief to support the hurricane relief efforts.

Please note that the football game will be aired for all you football fans!

COME AND SHARE FELLOWSHIP AND ENJOY AN AMAZING MEAL!
Reformation Luncheon Menu:  Help requested!

Following two powerful worship services on October 29th, the congregation will gather at noon for a luncheon in the Community Room. The event committee has planned an authentic German meal, and we are asking for your help.

The menu will consist of Bratwurst, Frankfurters (primarily for the children), Pork Loin with Vegetables and Gravy, Golden Glow Jello Salad,  Sauerkraut, Red Cabbage with Apples, Kaesspaetzele (a German version of macaroni and cheese ),  ****Oktoberfest Roast Chicken, ****Applesauce, ****Warm German Potato Salad,  ****Green Bean Casserole,****Oven Roasted Potatoes, ****Carrots, ****Breads, and ****Dessert.

While much of this menu will be prepared by committee members, the items above marked with an asterisk will (hopefully) be contributed by members of the congregation.  Recipes will be provided, and a sign-up sheet will be available in the Community Room beginning on Sunday, October 1st.

If you are interested in helping with set-up on Saturday, October 28th or in serving at the luncheon, please contact Loretta Lavoie at loretta4267@verizon.net or Carol Fournier at dixiechickcaroljean@yahoo.com
Reformation 500 Bookstore

As part of our Reformation celebration, St. James will be hosting a Reformation 500 Bookstore. Augsburg Fortress is providing us with 20 books about the history of the Reformation, Martin Luther's writings, and their impact on Christianity today.  Some of the titles include: When Lightning Struck: The Story of Martin LutherPapa Luther (designed for children ages 8-18), Resilient Reformer: The Life and Thought of Martin Luther; Day by Day We Magnify You: Daily Readings for the Entire Year, & The Life of Martin Luther: a Pop-Up Book.  The titles vary in length and complexity, beginning with books that are "easily accessible and a good place to begin" to those that are challenging.  At least two titles are suitable for children.

The books will be on display in the Community Room from Sunday, October 1st through Reformation Sunday on October 29th .  Books will be sold at 50% off the  retail price.   Orders will be taken and books will be received well in advance of Christmas.

Come by and browse!
A good book always makes a good gift!

10/1-Synod Sunday
Join us for worship this Sunday October 1 as we celebrate "New England Synod Sunday" with a visit from Kim Bergstrand-Associate to Bishop Hazelwood for mission and member of St. James.  Kim will share greetings from our Synod staff as well as news and information about what the New England Synod does!
October Mission of the Month-The New England Synod

Our October Mission of the Month will benefit the New England Synod-our regional body of the ELCA.  A recent report of the Synod council mentioned that mission support giving across New England is down by over $8,000 this year.  While St. James is current in our support, the Synod could use some additional funds. Find out more about the exciting mission of the Synod on Sunday October 1 and consider making a contribution to support our shared ministries!
Stewardship
In just a few weeks, we will begin our annual Fall Stewardship emphasis.  Our finance team will begin to gather information from teams and committees in the congregation and we will ask each household to prayerfully consider making a pledge for financial stewardship for 2018.  As  we begin this process, we are asking members to update their Demographic information.  There will be a copy of the most current directory available in the Community Room so that you may check the contact information that we have on file. If you have any changes or would like to complete a new demographic form you may use the one found hereThank you!
Winter Clothing Drive for Loaves and Fishes RI

Our friend Sham Ganglani has organized a Winter Clothing Drive to benefit Loaves and Fishes RI.  If you have winter coats, hats, gloves, mittens, etc that you are no longer using we invite you to drop them off at church or at Sham's house.  See more info in the flyer above.  -Pastor Andrew
