The Jarislowsky Chair of Cultural and Economic Transformation at Memorial University (
www.mun.ca/jchair) consists of a team of researchers primarily investigating various aspects of the attraction and retention of immigrants in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Team is currently working on two projects related to immigration including:
- “The Temporary Foreign Worker Program and Employers in Labrador.” This project aims to illuminate the experiences of employers using the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in the context of Labrador, where the demand for labour has vastly exceeded the supply, leading to a reliance from some businesses on temporary foreign workers. The objective of the project is to develop a more appropriate regional model in light of changing demographics, and provide recommendations to government and key stakeholders on how to implement such a model.
- “Syrian Refugee Arrival, Resettlement and Integration in Newfoundland and Labrador”. Refugees make valuable social and economic contributions to their communities of settlement and with this study we seek to expand our understanding of the settlement experiences of Syrian refugees in Newfoundland and Labrador. The project will examine factors influencing Syrian refugees’ intention to stay or leave the province, review existing successful practices in refugee retention and integration in Canada and internationally, and identify measures to increase refugee retention rate in the province in the hopes of determining practices that will lead to greater attraction and retention of refugee families in this province.
