St. Margaret's Notebook
August 18, 2016
Minds to think. Hearts to love. Hands to serve.

"As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality exist in our world, none of us can truly rest." ~Nelson Mandela~
You have probably seen the Poverty Awareness week flyer in the newsletter for the past several weeks. And with the kids starting school and schedules getting busy you may have skimmed over it. Let me encourage you to not just skim over it, but to read it and pick out a few activities attend. Pick a personal challenge to do as a family. Let's be a well educated parish on what it means to live in poverty and learn some ways that we as a community can do to make getting out of poverty a little easier.
Sunday evening is the kick off event at the Amp with a documentary screening of A Place at the Table. It begins at 7:30 and will wrap up around 10. I can think of no better reason to let the kids stay up a little past bedtime (note that while there is nothing inappropriate in the movie for younger children-it may not hold their attention for long). So come out and join us!
I will be at the 9 o'clock service on Sunday and will hang around until the 11 o'clock service if you want to see me for a personal challenge brochure or a flyer or you have any questions about any of the events. Come see me!
Looking forward to seeing you all there!
Meghan

From the Pastoral Care Committee
"
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him."
I John 5: 13-15
As you may have noticed this past week during the church service, we have begun the ministry of Lay Eucharistic Visitors (LEV). LEV's are members of a parish who are confirmed, adult communicants in good standing, trained, and specially licensed. These trained individuals provide the sacrament of the Eucharist to those members of the congregation that are hospitalized, homebound, or in a nursing home.
In congregations where a Deacon serves, that minister should supervise the work of the LEV's.
It is recommended that the individual who is to be ministered to should be prayed for specifically in the Prayers of the People by the congregation on that day.
The administration of the Sacraments to the persons visited should take place immediately after the Celebration of Holy Eucharist. Following the communion of the people, the LEV's come forward and are commended for this ministry and given a suitable container in which to carry the two vessels of bread and wine, and the necessary supplies. According to the Book of Common Prayer, the Holy Eucharist is the principle act in which all the baptized share in the table of the Lord. Sending the LEV's to provide the Eucharist to those who are unable to attend church on Sunday is intended to foster a sense of inclusion in the community.
Three members of the St. Margaret's parish received training from Hazel in order to perform this important ministry: Bruce Bobick, Pam Griffin, and Julie Williard.

Outreach Project: A Success!
Many thanks to everyone who contributed items for the Outreach Project that the Thursday Morning Ladies' Bible Study class adopted this summer. We received a lovely letter of appreciation from the Tanner Health System Volunteer Services and wanted to share it with all
of you:
August 10, 2016
St. Margaret's Members,
We would like to thank you for helping with the Volunteer Services Community Outreach project this summer. This project was organized by our pastoral care team and our Summer Teen Institute Students. Our students have worked very hard to create a program that will assist families of patients and help make their stay more comfortable. Our new hospitality carts have been decorated and stocked with toiletries, toys, coloring books, crayons and other items that will help put a smile on someone's face or help to provide a distraction during a difficult time. We would like to thank you for helping us supply these carts with your donations.
Jeanette Wheeler

The downstairs Callahan Center adult Sunday school class will begin September 11, 2016 and will meet between the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. Each Sunday we will explore the gospel reading assigned in the Lectionary for the Sunday of the class, following the guidelines for adult classes from taken from episcopaldigitalnetwork.com. Please join us for what we hope will be a spirited, interactive discussion of God's word as it pertains to our lives today.
Other Adult Education opportunities will be announced soon.
