"An inclusive community bringing Christ-like love, healing, and hope to all."
UNITED METHODIST COMMITTEE ON RELIEF (UMCOR) DISASTER RESPONSE
The recent floods in Louisiana and Mississippi have been devastating for thousands of people. Greg Forrester, UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response executive has noted that the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) issued an emergency grant to the Louisiana Annual Conference, releasing 2,950 cleanup buckets to United Methodist churches in LaFayette and Baton Rouge.
Forrester urged all people of goodwill who want to help in Louisiana and Mississippi, "Do not self-deploy. You mean to help, but at this stage your presence could unintentionally become an obstacle," he said. He also urged people not to send unsolicited aid, such as clothing.

"The best ways to help are to assemble and send cleanup buckets and to support the UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response Advance, #901670, with your donations," he stated. "This will allow us to assist the most vulnerable communities in need because of this and other disasters."

Your gift to UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response, Advance #901670 will help UMCOR respond to this and other disasters across the United States. You may send your check to the church or place it in the offering plate, with the words UMCOR Advance #901670, in the memo line.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING AND VOTE REGARDING RECONCILING CONGREGATION
On August 8th, the St. Mark's Leadership Council unanimously passed a motion affirming a new welcoming statement, and to move forward with a congregational vote. The welcoming statement reads:

St. Mark's United Methodist Church of Bloomington, Indiana is an inclusive community bringing Christ-like love, healing and hope to all. We embrace the United Methodist ideal of Open Hearts, Open Minds and Open Doors by welcoming those of all races, faith traditions, sexual orientations, and gender identities.

This Sunday, August 28th, after worship, the statement will come before the entire congregation, and for a vote of affirmation to determine if St. Mark's will affiliate with the Reconciling Ministries Network as a Reconciling Congregation.

There is an information and discussion session being hosted this Sunday morning in Room 10 at 9:30am (with the Nomads Class) that is open to anyone with questions.

Anyone who considers themselves part of the St. Mark's community is welcome to vote. (Official Membership is not required.) If you cannot be here on Sunday, but wish to vote, contact the church office. Votes may be submitted by email to the church office ( [email protected]), and will remain confidential. Ballots will also be available at the Welcome Center Desk on Sunday morning, and you can cast your vote there.

For more information, see page two the August Upcoming at St. Mark's. You are welcome to contact one of the pastors or a member of the Reconciling Ministries Task Force.

Childcare will be available for the meeting and vote. Contact Mary Beth Morgan or the church office to request childcare.

We invite you to visit the Reconciling Ministries Network webpage at www.rmnetwork.org.

THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 28th
CHILDREN AND YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL ROOM CHANGES
After a break for GODSPELL JR and church picnic last week, Children and Youth Sunday school will take place this Sunday, August 28th. Due to greater numbers of young people, we have made changes in the age groupings and the classroom locations. Please see room changes in the side bar on the right side of this section.

WELCOME AMY JONES,
Interim Children and Youth Ministries Coordinator
We are pleased to share that the Pastor-Staff Parish Committee has approved the hire of Amy Jones as a part-time Interim Children and Youth Ministries Coordinator.

Amy and her family (husband, Michael and children, Iris and Violet) have been part of the St. Mark's community for a number of years, starting with the Nursery School. Amy is a Sunday School teacher, has experience as a Kindergarten teacher at the YMCA, and has worked in various roles in the mental health community.

Amy will be here approximately 20 hours a week, which includes Sunday mornings. Her familiarity with the children, families, and Sunday School will be a great gift as the fall season begins. Amy is starting graduate school in January, which gives us some time to do a thorough search and hiring process to best meet the long-term needs of children, youth, and families. Please thank and welcome Amy for stepping into this role, and for sharing her many gifts!

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
SEEKING MORE SUNDAY SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS & A NURSERY CAREGIVER
With the leadership transitions in the Nursery and Sunday school and growth in numbers of children and youth, we have immediate needs to fill.

Please consider being a volunteer Sunday school teacher. We welcome volunteers for any age group. This is a one time per month commitment that doesn't take too much time. A curriculum and materials are provided. All efforts are made to accommodate volunteers to make the experience enjoyable and meaningful.

A paid childcare position is open for the Sunday morning nursery. This position is on Sunday mornings from 9:30am - 12:00pm. St. Mark's is seeking a nurturing adult who can provide sound references and a love for infant and toddlers. This caregiver does not need to be a part of the St. Mark's congregation.

Please contact Amy Jones or Mary Beth Morgan if you are interested in these opportunities or know of anyone who might be interested.

The Pilgrims meet at 9:15am in Room 13. Come join us this week for a series entitled THE OLD TESTAMENT. All are welcome to attend at any point in the series! Come join us for the lecture and the resulting discussion.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 28th: LECTURE #9
The God of Israel (Exodus 1-15 Part 2)
Prof. Amy-Jill Levine - Vanderbilt University Divinity School

This God responds to Moses: "Ehyeh ashewer ehyeh". "I am what I am". This is a God of being, a God of process, a God of future orientation. A God who takes whatever form this God wants to take. Subsequently, whenever this God is referred to he is referred to in Hebrew as "YHWH", which actually translates to, "He will be" or "He is what He is".

Come to Room 10 and join these Sunday morning discussions with the Nomads.  All are welcome to join in, even without reading the text!

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL
"BIBLE BANTER," 9:30am
The Bible Banter Adult Sunday School class meets in Room 11 each Sunday morning from 9:30am-10:15am. The class uses the Scripture text for the morning's sermon as a discussion-starter.

We look at the passage in its larger context, and sometimes explore a bit of Bible-writing history. We offer some thoughts on what the morning's sermon might look like, based on the Scripture the pastor has selected. We leave time to discuss implications of the Scripture for our own lives, and often even delve into topics far afield of the morning's original topic. You are invited to bring some breakfast goodies into Room 11 and join the conversation.
