The scripture, Matthew 4:12-23 tells of the first disciples and their response to Jesus' call to become fishers of men. Music by organist, Pam Freeman, and Chancel Choir led by Gerry Sousa, will be enjoyed along with hymns, prayer, and a time of greeting.

NEW MEMBER CLASSES
We will be hosting New Member Classes on Sunday, January 22nd and Sunday, January 29th, at 9:30am, in Room 15. If you are interested in becoming a new member, or just want to explore becoming a new member, you are most welcome. For families with children, there will be infant/toddler care in Room 25. Pre-school age and older children are welcome to attend Celebration! Worship for Children and Families in Room 26.
We will spend time getting to know one another, learning more about the church and our membership process, exploring questions, and talking with others about the many ways to get involved in the life and ministry of St. Mark's.
Whether you are new to this community or have been a part of St. Mark's for many years and are now considering membership, we hope that you will attend. New members will be received during worship Sunday, February 5th. If you are interested in membership but have a conflict with class or joining dates, we can work with you and your schedule. Parents are asked to sign children in at their Sunday School room. Children who attend Sunday School are invited to be part of the Children's Moment in Sanctuary Worship, and they can then return to Sunday School classrooms.
Please note that Celebration! at 9:30am and the 4 Years-First Grade Sunday School Class at 10:30am meet in Room 26.

SUNDAY SCHOOL ROOM CHANGE
The preschool-1st grade class will be moving permanently to a new space beginning this coming Sunday, January 22nd. This group has grown so much and we are really happy that so many new children have been part of our Sunday School program. Room 22 is in the same hallway as the nursery, on the other side of the nursery school office. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Jones or Mary Beth Morgan. We're so excited to be growing and using this wonderful classroom space. Thanks to the nursery school teachers who graciously share the beautiful classrooms to make this possible.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 29th
CHILDREN & YOUTH IN WORSHIP LEADERSHIP
All children and youth are welcome to participate in leadership roles on any Sunday, and especially this month in the January 29th worship service. Children and youth are welcome to be greeters (hand out bulletins), acolytes (light candles), liturgists (lead a prayer or read the scripture), create the bulletin cover, share a musical piece, artistic talent or another leadership gift with the congregation. There are opportunities for all ages. Please contact Mary Beth Morgan if your child would like to participate in a special way on January 29th. Junior high and senior high youth will stay in Sanctuary service; there will not be 10:30am Sunday school for youth that day.

The confirmation program includes opportunities for group experiences, time with a mentor, trips to other faith communities, service experiences, and a retreat. Mary Beth Morgan and Jimmy Moore with be leading the Confirmation program this year.

"Jerusalem: An Introduction to the City"

University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
In the third lecture, Prof. Magness reviews the history of Jerusalem from biblical accounts, beginning with David and Solomon and going down to the destruction of the city by the Babylonians in 586 BC.
All are welcome at any point in the lecture series. Come join us for the presentation and the resulting discussions.

The Nomads are a generally progressive group who meet Sundays at 9:30am in Room 10 for fellowship and discussion of selected readings on issues related to faith, spirituality, or social justice.
This Sunday, the Nomad Class will discuss the life & writings of Huston Smith who died on 1/5/17 at the age of 97. Smith was a Methodist minister, a college professor & a noted author. His most read book, The Religions of Man, introduced millions to the wisdom found in the great religious traditions. Smith promoted the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment as a way to "turn our flashes of insight into abiding light".

The Bible Banter Adult Sunday School class meets in Room 11 each Sunday morning from 9:30am-10:15am. The class uses the Scripture text for the morning's sermon as a discussion-starter.
We look at the passage in its larger context, and sometimes explore a bit of Bible-writing history. We offer some thoughts on what the morning's sermon might look like, based on the Scripture the pastor has selected. We leave time to discuss implications of the Scripture for our own lives, and often even delve into topics far afield of the morning's original topic. You are invited to bring some breakfast goodies into Room 11 and join the conversation.

DONATE CHILDREN'S BOOKS FOR NEW LEAF NEW LIFE
Church Women United will be collecting new and used children's books for New Leaf New Life, an organization which offers services to inmates in the Monroe County Jail during incarceration and after release. In this project, a New Leaf New Life volunteer makes an audio recording of the jailed parent reads a book to their child. The book and recording are then sent to the child. To support this meaningful ministry, you can place books in the Jail Ministry donation box in Garton Hall. Church Women United, an ecumenical group connected to St. Mark's United Methodist Women, will be collecting books until mid-February.

Deb Davis Explains CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) in Monroe County
All adults are cordially invited to a pitch-in dinner at 5:30pm on Wednesday, January 25th. Bring a dish to share and your table service. Following the meal, Deb Davis, an Owen County DCS attorney, will speak about the CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) program in Monroe County. Anyone who has the time and interest to contribute may volunteer as a CASA. CASAs provide advocacy to child victims to ensure that they remain at the forefront of the court proceedings and find a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible.

Plan to stay after worship and celebrate everyone's birthdays for the whole year! Everyone attending is asked to bring a dish to share for lunch. Sit at the table corresponding to your birth month and meet new friends who have the same birth month. For example, February birthday people sit at the February table, March birthdays at the March table, etc. Families can decide where to sit according to children's birthdays. Mark your calendar for this fellowship event and birthday celebration!
There will be a sign-up poster in Garton Hall if you are available to help with any of the following:
1. Set up tables on Friday (time yet to be determined)
2. Help make/set up drinks on Sunday morning, February 5th for the party.
3. Help clean-up after the event.

Participate in this fundraising event to support the Spring 2017 Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Build.
Soup and sandwich lunch provided by a generous benefactor.
Knitters will bring their knitting/crocheting/crafting projects and work on them throughout the event.
Feel free to bring knitting service ideas, patterns, and snacks to share.
Each knitter is asked to contribute $20-$50. Raise funds by asking friends or colleagues to donate, or you can contribute your own money.

FOR EITHER OPERATING BUDGET OR CAPITAL PROJECT
Cash gifts and stock gifts both allow you to take a charitable income tax deduction. When you gift long term appreciated stock to a charitable organization, you receive an additional tax benefit, because you avoid paying tax on the "built-in" capital gain for your stock. If you were to sell an appreciated stock, you would have to pay capital gains tax. The capital gains tax rate ranges from 15% - 23.8%, depending on your income. However, if you were to gift the stock directly to St. Mark's, you could avoid the capital gain all together and an additional tax deduction for the donation. Even better, St Mark's is able to sell the stock without having to pay capital gains tax.

They can help you transfer the stock to St. Mark's investment account and will also sell the stock without any transaction fees so that St. Mark's retains the full value of the stock.
