Episcopal Church Task Force on Marriage Discussion

The Task Force of the Study of Marriage , chaired by Rev. Brian Taylor, has created a Tool-Kit for the Study of Marriage and invited Episcopal congregations to use it for study and discussion. Karen Cobb and Chuck Jones will lead a series of discussions using these materials.

November 9

Same Sex Marriage and the Episcopal Church

At General Convention in July of 2015, the Episcopal Church will make a decision regarding same sex marriage. Come find out the recommendation of the task force on marriage and how St Michael's can make our voice heard in the process.

Dear Parishioners,

Around midnight, Friday, the pavilion was broken into and one of the big screen monitors was stolen, and possibly some of the remotes. None of the art on display was taken and no other damage was done.

The door is boarded up but will be repaired probably Wednesday.

It is very distressing to be violated in this way.  We do have precautions in place but the damage was still accomplished.

Please continue to be vigilant with alarms (it WAS set) and to be sure doors and windows are locked. The rest is up to our guardian angels.

Directories

The photo directories have arrived. If your picture is in the directory, you get a copy.  If not, you will have to wait till all are handed out and we can determine how many extras we may have. To pick up your directory: they are stacked, alphabetically on the counter in the front office. Find your copy. Leave the stacks intact. Then cross off your name from the list.

Hospitality Team

The Hospitality Team needs to find a new coordinator for "First Sunday Hospitality". This would involve being on hand in the parish hall from 8:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. for receiving and setting out food donations, and after the late service for serving and cleanup. We have two people serving between the 9 a.m. and the 11:15 a.m. services, but both are choir members and need someone to be in charge overall. Interested? Call Margaret Gant at 822-1412 or Linda Towle at 414-4742 for more information.

Casa San Miguel

You may have seen on the news that the New Mexico Dental Foundation conducted a free dental clinic called the Mission of Mercy this past weekend.  Several volunteers from the food pantry volunteered at this event held at the Santa Ana Star Center.  We had a great time - if you disregard the part where we had to drive to the far hinterlands of Rio Rancho at 5:00 in the morning - and serving at this event was much like serving at the food pantry on Tuesdays since so many of the people being treated needed dental attention but could not afford to see a private dentist.

The benefit to the food pantry came at the very end of the event on Sunday when the new Mexico Dental Foundation donated toothbrushes and water and juice to Casa San Miguel which we can now give to the people who come for food.  It's sad but true that people who have trouble affording food have just as much trouble affording basic dental items such as toothpaste and tooth brushes, and we can always use more at the pantry.

All Saints/Dia de los Muertos

The ofrenda/altar will be set up Saturday, October 25 and remain in place through Sunday, November 2. There are several options for providing your photos of family and friends and images/icons of saints for the ofrenda. You can place them:

Sundays, October 26 or November 2

between services

October 25 - October 31

when the church is openPlease label your photos with your name and phone number. If you like, attach a short statement identifying the person(s) in the photo.

The candle trays will be set up in front of the altar on November 2. You can light and place candles before/after services and at suggested times during the services.

While the ofrenda is in place, please take a few moments to look at the pictures whenever you are at church. It is a moving tribute to the communion of saints that are connected in some fashion to the St. Michael's family.

Animate:Practices

Tuesday nights September 16 - October 28, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

A series designed to animate discussion, with brief videos done by nationally known Christian speakers and writers, and beautiful participant journals for notes and doodles. Whether you are a seasoned student of Christian spiritual practice, or have never heard the term, each session will invite you to new exploration of what it means to live a Christian life.

Participant journals are $15. Kristin will facilitate these classes - it's helpful if you sign up and reserve a journal in advance by emailing [email protected], but not required.

Stewardship:"Did You Know?"
  • St Michael's costs for worship, liturgical and altar expenses are more than $11,500 each year
  • Our staff have only received a 1% wage increase in the past four years
  • General maintenance & cleaning supplies amount to more than $11,000 per year

Gifts from your treasures go toward paying these expenses, and your gifts of time and talent help reduce other expenses.  Please take these into prayerful consideration when making your annual pledge to St Michael's.  Thank you -- Stewardship Committee

School Clothing Drive

This month Community Connection's volunteers delivered over 200 pieces of clothing to La Luz and MacArthur Elementary schools collected in the month of September. Our goal was to provide warm outerwear, and through the generosity of our parish members, we furnished sweat shirts, hoodies, sweaters, thermal wear, and pullover tops. Members also gave t-shirts, jeans, sweat pants, and two pair of tennis shoes. The $105.00 received in donations was used to purchase much needed underwear. The clothing our parish is providing to our adopted schools has given the school counselor the ability to provide clean, new clothes to the students when they have an accident, or simply come to school in clothes that are in poor repair. The huge advantage of having their own school closet is that the counselor does not need to take valuable time away from her counseling duties to go to the APS Clothing Bank.

Again, our knitters and crocheters came through with two big bags of hats and scarves, a big fashion item these days among the kids, so there are never any left over. We are planning to collect these items again next year, so keep on stitching. Great thing to do on a cold winter night.

WELL DONE, ST. MICHAELS!

Next Week and Beyond
Search Committee Progress

What happens next?

We see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel!

We have about 20 applications in hand - a nice mix of men and women, and of talents.  They hail from both coasts and places in between.  They range in age from 30's to 60's.

Committee interviews have begun.

We have to give thanks and credit.  Our work is made much easier by our vestry as they keep the ship on course without having to pressure us.  And the vestry's work is made easier by you, our amazing congregation.  Did you realize that even without a rector,  all of our ministries are going full tilt?  They are - all of them!

At the close of each interview, we ask the applicant, "What do you want to ask us?"

They all want to know, "How is your church doing now, a year after your long time rector retired?"

Thanks to you, our answer easy, "We were surprised. and now happy. to report that all of our ministries are going great guns.  Thanks for asking."

Now, to find that one special person who has been called to be our spiritual leader.
