Marriage Equality Letter: An Update

Dear Parishioners,

Bishop Vono has responded to the letter from the Vestry requesting him to reconsider the issue of allowing clergy to officiate and solemnize same gender civil marriages. We are posting his response to the Clergy and Vestry on our web site. The letters from the Vestry and the Bishop are also attached to this update so that you may read both. A copy of the letters will also be available in the parish hall for all who would like a hard copy.

Also, the Bishop has requested that the Vestry meet to discuss this in an open forum that will be held after Easter. We will be setting the date for the forum after Holy Week. We will inform the parish of this date as soon as it is set so that if parish members wish to attend and participate in the discussion they may. There are documents on our web site that will be helpful to read before the discussion. Here is the link to those documents here. Please read them if you plan on attending the forum.

The Bishop's letter to to our Vestry and Clergy was a pastoral response to us and for that I am grateful. I am hoping that through dialogue and discussion we can come to better understand each other's perspectives. The Vestry knows that there is a process at the national level of the Church to bring about the officiating and solemnizing of same sex civil marriages. Furthermore, we realize that the Church and this Diocese have come a very long way on this road. However, we recognize that while the national Church and the Diocese are moving forward toward full inclusion at General Convention in 2015, it is our hope that we can also recognize that for some in our parish community the pace of the journey has been painful and slow.

Your Servant in Christ,

Cathy Bailey

Rector's Warden

Postulancy

Congratulations to J.P. Arrossa and to David Martin! Both were notified on April 2, 2014 that they have been made Postulants for the Priesthood by Bishop Michael Vono. Urban Way of the Cross

Friday, April 18 at 9:00 am

Join people from various Christian congregations on a pilgrimage through downtown Albuqueruqe's community of need and mercy, pain and hope, the places where Christ is being crucified in our world today. Our walk will link us to Jesus' walk with those on the margins: neglected children, the homeless, the elderly, the poor, and the immigrant. As we share in the sorrow and pain, we will also experience the joy and hope marking the places where Christ's crossbeam is being carried and His brow wiped by people serving those in deep need. Our journey will begin and end at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper St NW; all are welcome to a closing reception at the Immaculate Conception Parish Hall.

Good Friday Pilgrimage

Friday, April 18 at 6:00 am

As the culmination of your Lenten journey, please consider joining with your brothers and sisters in Christ who will make a Good Friday pilgrimage to El Santuario de Chimayo.  Located north of Santa Fe, El Santuario de Chimayo is a small adobe church built in 1816 that embodies the history, culture, and faith of the people of northern New Mexico.   The shrine is known for its curative powers, and for over 200 years, pilgrims have rubbed themselves with the Tierra Bendita ("Holy Dirt") found in a small room there or have taken it back to others who have not been able to make the pilgrimage.

In preparation for this journey, pilgrims are encouraged to attend two meetings in Albuquerque (one on March 30, and the second on April 6) that will focus on the concepts of journey and pilgrimage as well as on Hispanic spirituality. On Good Friday, pilgrims will meet at a central point in Albuquerque at 6:00 am and will carpool to the church in Namb (located approximately eight miles from Chimayo). Pilgrims may choose to walk from there or to drive to the Penitent Crosslocated approximately 1 miles from Chimayo. The Good Friday Liturgy will be celebrated at the Penitent Cross, and a Service of Healing with oil and Tierra Bendita will be held at El Santuario de Chimayo. A van containing water and first aid provisions will accompany pilgrims on their journey. Pilgrims will return to Albuquerque by approximately 6:00 pm. Carpool drivers are needed.

For more information about this pilgrimage, including the preparatory meetings, please contact Deacon Patty Soukup at psoukup@dioceserg.org or at 505-881-0636. Please respond ASAP in order to be included in the preparatory meetings.

Easter Sunday Fellowship Invitation

Sunday, April 20

The LGBT Community is hosting the fellowship coffee hour after each service on Easter Sunday morning, April 20.  We are inviting all parishioners/congregants/visitors to bring food and goodies to share during that fellowship time.  We encourage everyone to bring fruit, vegetables, salads, breakfast-type breads and DEVILED EGGS.  (Deviled Eggs are always a huge favorite.)  Easter morning always brings a huge number of friends, relatives, and newcomers to St. Michael's.  We want to make everyone feel welcome with a bountiful feast.  Thanks to all in advance for your help and generosity.

United Thank Offering

Many of you remembered to bring your United Thank Offering "little blue box" or envelope on Palm Sunday, Thank you very much for your generosity. But I suspect that many more forgot to bring them in. Just to let you know, you may bring them in any Sunday and drop them into the collection baskets. They will be just as meaningful and just as welcomed.  Additional boxes and envelopes are available in the card rack in the back of the Narthex.

Several of you asked questions about the distribution of the United Thank Offering money collected last year. Proposals are now being accepted and reviewed by the National Episcopal Church  They will publish the winning proposals, probably sometime this summer.  As soon as they are made public we will make that information available. One hundred percent of United Thank Offerings are distributed to  further Christ's mission in the world.  There are no "overhead" expenses. In the next few weeks we will also publish information about the total amount contributed by this congregation.

St Michael and All Angels will have another UTO "Ingiving" this fall, over the six weeks culminating with Michaelmas Sunday. We will pass out boxes at that time or you may retrieve one from the card rack now and use it all summer to make coin offerings to recognize your many blessings.
