HKS Architects chosen to conceptualize redevelopment of the Trop site trop

The Tropicana Field RFQ review committee ranked HKS Architects as their top choice among seven finalists that presented proposals for redeveloping the 85-acre Tropicana Field site. HKS Architects, a Dallas-based urban design firm, has operations in New York City and a local office in Tampa. A key aspect of the firm's proposal was visualizing the site as waterfront property, given its proximity to Tampa Bay. The proposal includes enhancing the site's connection to Brooker Creek and creating more linkages to the waterfront to develop the property into a valuable asset.

The RFQ requires two parts of the master plan: one that includes a new baseball stadium as part of the developmentand one that envisions the site as an entirely blank slate. The plan that includes a new stadium is due by September 30th. The city is under contract negotiations with HKS, and will go to City Council for approval in June.
Tampa Bay ranks as a top metro for economic growth jobs

Tampa Bay placed at the top of the pack according to a couple of recent studies on economic growth in the nation's metropolitan areas.

First, an analysis by the New York Times studied employment statistics across the United States using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The study found that employment in Tampa Bay grew by 24% since December 2009, making it the 4th fastest growing job market in the country and the fastest in Florida during that time period. At the same time, local unemployment fell from 11.9% to 4.6%. Only San Jose, Austin, and Charlotte increased employment faster than Tampa Bay.

A second study, conducted by Headlight, a data analytics firm, tracked employment growth in 53 metros with a population of at least 1 million, and ranked Tampa Bay at #8. Headlight examined employment data from the BLS over a one-year time period from December 2014 to December 2015. Other Florida cities that ranked in the top 10 include Orlando and Jacksonville. While the U.S. average for employment growth was at 2%, Headlight found that Tampa Bay grew at 3.5% over that year.

City approves bike share program bike

City Council voted to approve spending $1.5 million, including $250,000 in BP settlement funds, to start a bike share program in St. Petersburg. The city will soon enter into a contract with CycleHop, which operates Tampa's Coast Bike Share program, to operate St. Petersburg's program. 300 rental bikes will be spread among 30 stations and initial routes will cover downtown, parts of Deuces Live, Grand Central and other neighborhoods. The bike share program is expected to be up and running by fall.

"Tampa has been an amazing success," says Eric Trull of Coast Bike Share. "We're expecting to do even better in St. Pete. We've got a great grid system over there, fantastic trail, and we expect big things in St. Pete." Bikes will be available 24 hours a day. Riders may pay $8 per hour, buy monthly memberships for $20 to $30, or buy annual memberships for $70 to $100. Bikes can be picked up and dropped off at any of the 450 bike racks in and around downtown.

"I think bike sharing is something strongly supported by the community," says Council Member Darden Rice. "This is a way to help get people to jobs, to get people to buses. This is a transportation choice that people want."

Great Bay's new headquarters facility supports one of the Top Workplaces great

Mayor Rick Kriseman, Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin, and managers Jessica Eilerman and Sophia Sorolis recently visited Great Bay Distributors, Inc. The company, which has been in business for over 46 years, has a great local history. Founded by Claude Focardi and family, Great Bay is the State's largest independently owned distributor of Anheuser Busch products, serving Pinellas, Pasco, Citrus, and Hernando counties. Great Bay also partners with many of the area's craft brewers, including 3 Daughters, Big Storm, Coppertail, and the Tampa Bay Brewing Company.

The company purchased 100 acres in St. Petersburg and constructed a state of the art headquarters facility, with over 280,000 SF, which they moved into last summer. The main corporate offices, a large meeting room, controlled environment warehouse space (CEW), and garage maintenance facility are all located at the new site. The CEW alone is over 180,000 SF and includes a 23,000 SF keg cooler.

To help power the facility, Great Bay has installed Florida's largest private solar array producing 1.5 MW of power, with all components made in the USA. This solar field produces enough power to cover 80% of Great Bay's power needs.

Great Bay employs over 360 people working together to service its retail partners with responsibilities that include sales, warehousing, merchandising, marketing, administrative and more.  Employees in St. Petersburg enjoy a beautiful workspace, filled with local art curated by Chad Mize, murals curated by the Vitale Brothers, and a living aquarium. Outside are tables and a walking path around the lake. In 2016, Great Bay was nominated as one of the Top Workplaces by its employees.

A big day of openings in the Tyrone area west

Mayor Kriseman leads a group bicycle ride along the newly completed Walter Fuller Trail and Pinellas Trail.

Saturday, April 16th  saw the celebration of 3 completed projects on the city's west end. Mayor Kriseman along with neighborhood leaders and city staff took advantage of the excellent spring weather to celebrate the blossoming of a new trail facility and two businesses.

First, the group attended a ribbon cutting for the Walter Fuller Trail, which connects the park of the same name to the Pinellas Trail. From there, the group cycled to the new Cobb Luxury Theater at Tyrone Square Mall where they admired the trail connection and mural that connects directly from the Pinellas Trail to the theaters. Finally, the group pedaled further up the Pinellas Trail to celebrate a ribbon cutting at the new facility for Northwest Collision Center

All three stops throughout the day highlighted the city's efforts to add new facilities for residents and businesses that are both appealing and built to last.
