Get Active This Spring!

Emporia Middle School is sponsoring a Spring Fling 5K Saturday, March 18 starting at the school. Cost of registration is a donation to the EHS Spartan Stop. Register here.

Logan Avenue Elementary is sponsoring a Disc Golf Tournament Saturday, April 1, at Peter Pan Park. Registration is $25 by March 25. Register here.

Riverside Elementary and Emporia NEA are sponsoring the Bunny Hop 5K Saturday, April 15, starting at Riverside. Registration is $10 for students and $20 for adults. Register here.

Autism Awareness Walk
Join the Autism Awareness Walk from 3:30-5 pm Saturday, April 8, at the EHS track. The event is sponsored by the FHSEC Tertiary Support Interdisciplinary Team and EHS Circle of Friends. Walkers also can visit community information booths regarding services and supports available for individuals on the spectrum and their families. 

Summer Paychecks
Employees must notify the Business Office by April 1 to request lump-sum payments for summer checks. Forms were sent to new employees; other employees who want to change their election must notify the Payroll Office at 341-2228 or 341-2428. Lump-sum payments will be made June 30.

2017 Kansas Master Teacher
EHS communications teacher Laura Schwinn is one of seven Kansas Master Teachers selected for 2017. She will be honored on Master Teacher Day April 5 at Emporia State University. Read more here.

Pennies for Patients Campaign
Logan Avenue students, staff, parents and community partners raised $5,474 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during the Pennies for Patients Campaign. Village, W.A. White/Turning Point and Emporia Middle School also participated in the campaign. The drive exceeded a goal of $3,500 and students were rewarded with a dunk tank for staff.

Mobilizing Literacy Year 2
The board approved the Year 2 plan for the Mobilizing Literacy Grant. The district is using the grant to address school readin ess. The Mobilizing Literacy Action Plan for year 2 includes:
  • continue the new preschool classroom for 30 students at Maynard; 
  • make the Mobilizing Literacy Family Liaison a full-time position; 
  • add school readiness testing for all students seeking slots in the preschool classrooms and incoming Kindergartners; 
  • continuing the local Lending Library; 
  • provide a two-week Jump-Start Kindergarten experience for identified students; 
  • provide KDHE-approved professional learning for local preschool service providers; 
  • and provide partial scholarships to identified families for private preschools.

TPA Advisory Council
The board approved a recommendation from Superintendent Kevin Case to establish a Turning Point Academy Advisory Council to further define the mission of the program and to provide input on future direction. The Council will include Board of Education members, district administration, TPA staff and parents. 

RecXtra Fees Tabled
The board tabled a request to charge RecXtra fees by trimester instead of by semester.

Other Board Business:
The board approved the following:
  • support Mike Crouch for the KSHSAA board of directors and Gregg Noel to the KSHSAA Appeal Board
  • reemployment of current district administrators
  • donation of a 3D printer from the Timmerman PTO to Timmerman Elementary
  • a $1,000 donation from United Way of the Flint Hills to the EHS Spartan Stop
  • a $1,500 donation from Longbine Autoplaza for the Arrive Alive tour coming to EHS April 18 & 19
  • donation of six picnic tables from the Riverside PTO to Riverside Elementary
  • donation of breast pumps from the Flint Hills Community Health Center for district employees
