Resign Without Penalty
Reminder to any certified staff: considering a job change:  You can submit a resignation on or before June 2 to avoid paying a penalty.

2017 Corporate Challenge
District employees who are interested in participating in the 2017 Corporate Challenge in August should contact Jill Lynch at Walnut. She will start putting the team together in late June. Last year, the district had two teams. Corporate Challenge is an approved Wellness Activity.

Staff Recognition Is May 17
The district Staff Recognition Reception & Program will be at 5 pm Wednesday, May 17, in the EHS commons. The program will recognize district length-of-service awards, special awards received by staff during the past year, and the retiring employees. As of today, we have 26 employees retiring.

Sign-up sheets will be posted in all buildings starting April 24. Be sure to include any guests you plan to bring. The event is free for all employees and a guest.

Preschool Enrollment at Maynard
Maynard Early Childhood Center will take enrollment applications for the 2017-18 school year on Tuesday, April 25, from 7 am to 5 pm. No appointment is neededWe offer free half-day preschool for eligible 3- and 4-year-old children.  Parents are asked to bring their child's birth certificate, immunization records and a recent physical exam. Parents also will need income information if they wish to complete an application for free/reduced lunch benefits. For more information, call the school at 341-2260.

17-18 Calendar Revised
18-19 Calendar Adopted
The board approved revisions to the 2017-18 academic calendar to reflect the end of the STREAM Grant. Three days were removed, one day from each trimester.

The board also adopted an academic calendar for 2018-19. Both calendars were recommended by the Professional Development Council after considering staff and parent input.

Education Commissioner Visit
Superintendent Kevin Case discussed the recent visit from Education Commissioner Randy Watson to Emporia. Dr. Watson met with principals and district administrators on March 30 to share new data on post-secondary success in Kansas school districts. 

Other Board Business:
The board approved the following:
  • request to add an assistant principal at Emporia Middle School to reflect a projected enrollment increase at the middle level
  • request to purchase a used bus for $50,046 from Kansas Truck Equipment Co.
  • policy updates as recommended by KASB
  • fee schedule for 2017-18, including a $20 technology fee that will be reduced for students eligible for free/reduced meals
  • meal prices for 2017-18
Consent Agenda Approvals
  • request to dispose of surplus technology equipment
  • a $2,500 donation to The Spartan Stop from the St. Patrick's Day Committee
  • a $950 donation from Timmerman PTO to install an automated gate
  • a $1,000 donation to Logan Avenue from the Clint Bowyer 79 Fund for STEM supplies
  • a $3,500 donation to EMS from the Clint Bowyer 79 Fund for a wrestling mat
