The Centurion Law Enforcement
FCPO Newsletter and Bible Study
The "thin blue line " covered by the blood of Christ.
Fellow  Sheepdogs  & Supporters:

As always, my hope is that this week's newsletter and Bible study finds you " STANDing firm" (wait for it...) on God's Word with a front sight focus on Christ our Captain. Interestingly enough, God has pressed me to share a study on what it means to stand firm from His perspective -- scroll down!

Here on the local front (as in Colorado Front Range), we'll finish up Acts 15 at this week's Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry/FCPO Denver/Aurora "cop church" chapter meeting (Thursday, March 23rd, 7 PM). Take note that we'll be meeting in Room 138 (Calvary Aurora) due to the church needing our regular room. Invite a colleague, bring your spouse and follow the signs... As always, I'll recap our study in next week's newsletter.

And finally, here's last week's edition if you missed it (always re-posted on my Facebook, Twitter feeds and on our website as well): "The Law Can't Save You."

Again, stay safe on the street while being radically bold ("Code 3" sense of urgency) in sharing the hope we have in Christ with others!

STAND FIRM!

Ephesians 6:10-18
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against  the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against  the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against  the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;  and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God... (added emphasis mine)

In this passage alone, the word "stand" is used four times. Paul adds to it in 1 Corinthians 16:13 (one of my favorite passages of Scripture) where he writes, "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong." (again, added emphasis mine). The phrase is used numerous other times in Scripture, including the passages I've listed for you below.

So what is God telling us here, and why is He pressing me to share on this short phrase?  What is the application for our lives both as believers (hold on to this word) and as cops/servant-warriors? As prayer warriors and Christians in general? If you follow me on social media, you'll know that part of what I do in in law enforcement (and to some extent in ministry) is ferreting out fraudsters. Both in ministry and in the world of crime, the words "fraud" and "false" (as in false teachers) are generally synonymous. While I could list numerous such spiritual fraudsters here that have and are leading so many astray, God is instead pressing me to let Him speak to us through His wholly inerrant and sufficient Word. Of course, that can only bear maximum fruit when the reader understands Scripture through the leading of the Holy Spirit, and that is only possible when the reader has repented of their sin and entered into a genuine, born again personal relationship with Christ (more on that at the end). Let's dig in!

What is the context in which God calls us to "stand firm"?  Who are we to "stand firm" against?  Here are two main points for your prayerful consideration:

(1) STAND FIRM AGAINST THE ENEMY BY PUTTING ON GOD'S FULL ARMOR

It is no accident that I use "fullarmor911" in my personal email address. Moreover, Paul is intentional in using today's signature passage of Ephesians 6 with the words "armor" and "resist" (v. 13). The word " resist" comes from the Greek root, "to stand," meaning literally to stand against. It's a military term for holding on to a position that is under attack. It implies the courage to stand your ground because of your allegiance to Jesus as Lord and King, even when others may be fleeing combat because the enemy seems so strong (and understand that a Roman soldier's battle sandals had iron cleats on the soles to help them stand firm in their famous, front-facing shield wall battle formation, the testudo).

An incident about one of David's mighty men, Shammah the son of Agee, further illustrates what it means to stand firm in battle ( 2 Samuel. 23:11-12): " And the Philistines were gathered into a troop where there was a plot of ground full of lentils, and the people fled from the Philistines. But he took his stand in the midst of the plot, defended it and struck the Philistines; and the Lord brought about a great victory." Because of his allegiance to David, Shammah stood firm in the Lord (not in his own power) who brought the victory.

As I have taught many times, the "putting on" of one's spiritual armor is akin to how we in law enforcement put on our physical body armor -- it is an INTENTIONAL act. Likewise, there is no place in Scripture where God tells us to take it off (unlike the relief of removing our body armor after a long shift).

Finally here, understand that we are commanded to stand, not flee. The Roman soldier wore a breastplate -- with generally little armor on the back. To turn and run from the enemy was to open one's back to a death blow (intentionally so). You'll also note that the testudo was intentionally designed to advance or hold ground -- there was little rear protection (thus again is my biblical emphasis on a "front sight" focus on Christ who stands before us in the spiritual warfare of this life).

(2) STAND FIRM AGAINST THE ENEMY BY GROWING IN THE WORD.
There are four main things to consider here:

(a)  Strong Christians are grounded in the truth of Scripture. Unless you know the Word well, as Jesus did when He defeated Satan, you will not stand firm when trials and tribulations come your way or you are confronted with false teaching.

(b) It it vital that we have a tactical and strategic understanding of our enemy's schemes. In 2 Corinthians 2:11 Paul states, "so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes." If you're ignorant of his fraudulent schemes (tactics), the devil will be able to take advantage of you. He often works through secular culture (books, movies, music...) to lead us astray.  He uses discouragement, pride, selfishness, "feelings" (if it "feels good, then it has to be right..."), lust, and many other traps to lure us away from the Lord. To stand firm against the enemy, we must understand his tactics .

(c) Standing firm against the schemes of the devil means that we stand firm on the core doctrines of the faith. We cannot budge on the Trinity, the person and work of Christ, biblical salvation through Christ alone, or the inspiration and authority of Scripture. But God also instructs us in His Word to show tolerance for one another in love (Ephesians 4:2). That verse implies that we will not always agree with one another on every point of doctrine or on every method of how to go about the Lord's work. To stand firm, we need to have discernment (through the prayer and meditating on the Word) about where to do battle and where to be tolerant of differences.

(d) Stand firm against the enemy by having backup!  As I taught in a recent Bible study (Iron Sharpens Iron), we must NOT try to stand on our own but rather through iron sharpens iron fellowship with other "tactically sound" (mature) believers AND in actual fellowship with the Lord. On this, Francine Rivers said, "Stand firm in the Lord, Stand firm and let Him fight your battle. Do not try to fight alone."  Folks, it is no accident that Paul used a Roman soldier as his model in Ephesians 6, and that came with the understanding that what made a Roman army so powerful was their unit discipline and cohesion (you must NOT go it alone).

In every Christian's life there will be trials, disappointments, persecution, and temptations, but through all this God is calling His faithful to stand firm in Christ and in His Word. Sadly, m any who profess to know Christ as Lord and Savior (??) are compromising with "the world," twisting Scripture to suit their lifestyles and aligning themselves with  false teachers who clearly don't want you to stand firm in the Word of God. I beg you -- don't give in but rather maintain a "front sight focus"  on Christ as we wield the Sword of His Word.

Here are some just 10 (there are many others) other passages of Scripture to help us stand firm (added emphasis mine):

Psalm 93:5 --  Your statutes, LORD, stand firm; holiness adorns your house for endless days.

Psalm 119:89-91 --  Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you.

1 Corinthians 15:58 -- So then, dear brothers and sisters,  stand firm. Do not be moved!

Luke 21:19 --   Stand firm, and you will win life.

2 Corinthians 1:24 -- Not that we lord it over your faith,  but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith.

Proverbs 10:25 -- When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but t he righteous stand firm forever. (the righteous, of course, are those made so in Christ)

Matthew 10:22 -- You will be  hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Psalm 33:11-12 --  The Lord's plan stands firm forever. His thoughts stand firm in every generation. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LordBlessed are the people he has chosen as his own.

2 Chronicles 20:17 --  You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.'"

2 Corinthians 1:20-22 -- For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God.  Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.  (the reason we are to stand firm)

So how about you?  Are you the genuine, born again "believer" I mentioned at the beginning of this study?  Understand this: without Christ as your Lord and Savior, you do not have the Holy Spirit in you, and without Him, we are ultimately powerless against a common enemy. ONLY those who are "in Christ" are able to put on the spiritual armor required to stand firm against the enemy.  Is that you?  Consider the following:

(1) Jesus' first words in His earthly ministry were, " Repent and believe in the Good News " -- Mark 1:15 . To " repent " is a 180 -- a radical change of mind as it relates to your sin. To " believe " as God intends it to  completely and radically surrender to Him in faith  ("believe" and "faith" have the same Greek root) in the same way you have faith that your body armor will stop the rounds it is designed to stop! The two words are synonymous in meaning and intent. And the Good News?  That is the Gospel

(2) In John 3:1-21, Jesus said, "... you must be born again." Note our Lord's emphasis on " must" (not "may" or "should"). This is the " life-saving/life-changing" personal relationship (not "religion") with Christ that I stress so often. See " What does it mean to be a born again Christian." Remember that you can't be in a RELATIONSHIP with yourself or an idol!

AND then...

(a) Take the " Good Person Test" and see how you do (as shown in this study, you can't ever be "good" enough without Christ). Then go to...
(c)  Cops and Salvation (a powerful, short message from police Commander Travis Yates of Ten-Four Ministries and Law Officer Magazine ).
