Message from the Executive Director

 Michelle Coleman picture

Our name change is an ongoing process rather than an event. We have been updating our outreach materials to reflect not just the new name, but the ways in which our services have changed to address the needs of survivors.

Last month we launched our new website, StandUpPlacer.org. We have created a more interactive experience for our users with the new site and plan to add content frequently. I invite you to visit our new website often to find out more about our activities, services, and events.

Sincerely,

 2013 Survivors' Run

Sierra Doctors Team
Board Member Ian Boeye & the Sierra Doctors Team

On Saturday, May 4th, Stand Up Placer hosted our Third Annual Survivors' Run at Maidu Park in Roseville. This family-oriented event celebrated survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and honored the countless victims who are no longer here to share their stories. The weather was a perfect 62 sunny degrees at 8:30am as the crowd of all ages gathered to begin the 5K run/walk around Maidu Park.

Upon arriving, participants were welcomed by our team of passionate volunteers and sponsors. A bright orange air dancer swayed with the wind, but almost seemed to dance with the upbeat music that contributed to the energetic pulse of the event. After checking in, participants were encouraged to read the stories of victims who were honored by life-size Silent Witnesses. The true stories and profiles of each victim were told from the first person perspective, bringing awareness that domestic and sexual abuse permeates all areas of our society - with no limits on socioeconomics, age, or gender.

The local enthusiasm was unmistakable as young and old awaited at the starting line as Michelle Coleman, Executive Director of Stand Up Placer yelled, "on your mark, get set... go!" Participants included teams from local organizations, including Sierra Doctors, who had over 8 entrants. Along the route, runners and walkers were cheered on by spectators. Every participant was a winner, and congratulated along the way. However, there were quite a few who won the competitive time in their divisions, and showed extraordinary speed and endurance. Click here to check your time.

We would like to thank all of our dedicated participants, staff, volunteers and sponsors, and look forward to next year. The Survivors' Run is an active statement showing the Placer County community that we are taking a stand against violence together.

Thank You for Standing Up with Us!

This month, we'd like to give a special shout out to some remarkable young people who have chosen to support us. We are thrilled to see these children and young adults stepping up to make our community stronger!

The Builders' Club at E.V. Cain Middle School, facilitated by the Auburn Kiwanis Club, ran a toy drive.

Bailey Snow is a student at Granite Bay High School who started his own non-profit, Brick Dreams, to provide Legos for kids in need.

The National Charity League, a group of young women and their mothers, conducted a drive for pillows & towels for survivors.

Volunteer Spotlight:  Marysue Ezzell
Thrift Boutique Manager Marysue Ezzell

Stand Up Placer's Thrift Boutique was created and is staffed completely by volunteers. We sat down recently with Marysue Ezzell, who has volunteered 5 hours a day, three days a week at the boutique for the past three and a half years.

Q: Can you tell us about your role at the thrift boutique, Marysue?

A: Susan Reynolds and I are co-managers of the store.  We schedule volunteers to work at the shop, usually 3 hour shifts, sort through the clothes, steam them, price them and then the clothes go on display in the store.

Q: What inspired you to volunteer?

A: I believe in being part of the solution to domestic violence and wanted to help. I like what we do to help these women get on with their lives and to better their lives. Watching the women come in to pick out clothes for themselves and their children with their vouchers has been one of my most gratifying experiences while working at the store.

Q: What do you enjoy most at the boutique?

A: We have a very nice group of volunteers that give of their time and I really like working with the customers. We have so many people that tell us they appreciate our being here to help survivors. I enjoy every aspect of the shop.

Q: Is there anything else you would like our readers to know, Marysue?

A: We can always use donations of in-season clothing. Donations can be dropped off M-F between 11 & 3.  We would love to have more volunteers. We are going to be open on the last two Saturdays of the month from 10-2 beginning in June.

The shop is located at: 1310 Grass Valley Highway in Auburn, CA.

Come in and shop at our boutique and support Stand Up Placer!  We have great prices on clothing, and as always, women in our safe house and programs can come in anytime and receive clothing for free.

That is one of the reasons why we so appreciate your donations.  Please keep us in mind when you are purging your closets.

See you soon!

Once I knew only darkenss and stillness...my life was without past or future...but a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness, and my heart leaped to the rapture of living.
