I believe strongly in the power of story and in sharing those stories with others.
Three years ago, with the help of Heather Brooke Robertson-Devine and the amazing staff at Star Center Elementary, we began having our students share their stories when we started The Cartonera Project, our school-wide celebration of every student being an author.
Each year, our students take a favorite piece of their writing, publish it into a cardboard book called a cartonera, then share it with our school and community at our writing celebration of The Cartonera Project.
EVERY 5K-5 student in our school participates. EVERY student has a story to share. EVERY students' book is read by someone else.
This is powerful stuff!
Our Star Center Cartonera Celebration will be on Thursday, May 11th this year from 12:30 - 1:30 pm and 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Everyone is invited to come and celebrate our student writers and the power of writing.
I am also excited to bring our story of The Cartonera Project: Every Student an Author to other schools around the country when I speak at the following conferences: USM Summer Spark (Milwaukee, WI): June 12th All Write Conference (Warsaw, IN): June 22nd Illinois Reading Council Conference (Peoria, IL): October 7th
Sometimes, crazy ideas turn into big, important ideas. I couldn't be prouder to be a part of this!

Congratulations to our Destination Imagination Finalists!

Congratulations to Star Center Students, Gage K., Brennyn J. and Zoe Z., who will be advancing to the Destination Imagination Global Finals on May 22nd in Knoxville, TN!!
At Globals they will be competing against teams from 48 states and 24 foreign countries. The team competed in the technical problem "Show and Tech". They had to build a stage that moved one team member from one point to another another, create 2 theatrical special effects and had to create an opening act and a closing act.
Other Star Center students competing at the DI state level included third graders Sivryn A. and Shyann T.
All Destination Imagination Teams began working on their selected problem in October 2016.
