WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT:
Stars, Stripes, & Democrats

This week, we celebrated our nation's 240th birthday and, with the General Election just four months away, we are about to launch our local Party's 10th Coordinated Campaign. For those of you not familiar with the term, this is the unified campaign, launched by the Dallas County Democratic Party (DCDP) each election year after the primary, to convince the citizens of Dallas County to elect our Democratic candidates.

Aristotle told us, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." From that wisdom, we get the concept of synergy, the truth that people working as a team can achieve far more than if they work alone. This is the reasoning behind the Coordinated Campaign. Democratic candidates pool their resources, the DCDP contributes funds designated for the General Election, and everyone works together to promote Democratic voters throughout the county.

Although we elected Democrats to countywide office in 2002 and 2004, the year 2006 was the first year we swept the county and fully embraced the Coordinated Campaign plan. Since then, coordination has allowed us to sweep three additional times, and win all but one office in 2014. This year, we will work together again, sweep Dallas County, and compete for every Democratic vote for our competitive House District candidates who are taking on Republican opponents.

It's too bad that the Republican Party could not, or did not, prevent the rise of Donald Trump. Instead, defeating Trump has become our job as Democrats. Nobody believed Donald Trump would win the Republican presidential nomination. Nobody thinks he can win the White House. But we cannot fall victim to over-confidence. The lesson of Trump's rise is clear: We must take the threat seriously, even if his campaign seems like a joke. We must work together through the Coordinated Campaign to defeat Trump, to make Texas as competitive as possible, and to elect Democrats, from the top of the ticket all the way down.

In Dallas County, our job is to fight hard for every vote from our established base and to also grow our party by reaching out to new voters. By pulling together, we can make this exciting challenge achievable. You don't have to be a candidate to work on the Coordinated Campaign. In fact, most of us are not candidates. Each of us can help by:

1) Encourage your favorite candidates to participate
2) Volunteer for block walking, phone banking, and other campaign tasks
3) Donate funds to the DCDP Coordinated Campaign

We need you! Please contact us to get involved.

Yours Democratically,

Carol Donovan, DCDP Chair
