Meet Our Staff Mary Endreson, PA-C Mary completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida where she went on to pursue a masters in epidemiology and health policy research. Mary received her physician assistant degree with a concentration in dermatology from Nova Southeastern University in 2012. When not seeing patients she loves spending her free time with family and dog, Milly.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS  Actinic keratosis is a pre-cancerous lesion of the outer layer of the skin caused by long term sun exposure. These lesions are termed pre-cancerous because if not treated they have the potential to progress into a Squamous Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer. They are most commonly found on sun exposed surfaces of the body including face, ears, lips, neck, scalp, forearms and back of hands. The appearance of Actinic Keratosis may vary but most often they appear red and scaly. There are multiple treatment options for AK’s including cryosurgery or freezing with liquid nitrogen, using topical creams and photodynamic therapy (blue light). Sun protection and avoidance is the most important factor in preventing Actinic Keratoses.

FEATURED PROCEDURE Photodynamic Light Therapy Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with blue light is used to treat body areas with numerous actinic keratoses. PDT uses a photosensitizing agent which concentrates in the precancerous cells and is then activated when exposed to the blue light. The reaction between the oxygen, light and photosensitizing agent destroys the pre-cancerous cells. Incubation times vary depending on treatment area. The medication is applied in office and is left on to penetrate into the pre-cancerous cells. Once the incubation time is complete the patient is exposed to blue light for approximately seventeen minutes. During this time there may be stinging, and burning. Redness, scaling, crusting and swelling may occur and usually last 10 to 14 days after your treatment. Patients must avoid exposing the treated area to sunlight for 48 hours. A zinc based sunscreen must be used for the first 48 hours.
