GNETS, First Priority Act, Teacher of the Year, ESSA Draft Plan, Milestones

The State Board of Education met Thursday, June 15, 2017. A full agenda is available   HERE. The meeting opened with a presentation by representatives from Pratt & Whitney in Columbus, regarding their impressive CTAE program.

GNETS Reviewed, Subcommittee to Work with ETAC Announced
During public comment, several speakers expressed confusion about and opposition to the new GNETS rule, available HERE. The board also announced formation of a subcommittee that will work with the Education Turnaround Advisory Council (ETAC) formed by the First Priority Act, which passed during the 2017 legislative session and which was recently signed into law. The first meeting of the ETAC, an advisory group tasked with identifying a Chief Turnaround Officer to lead implementation of the act, was scheduled for Thursday afternoon following SBOE adjournment.

Superintendent Update - 2018 Teacher of the Year
During his update, State School Superintendent Richard Woods glowingly described the newly-named   2018 Georgia Teacher of the Year, John Tibbetts from Worth County.

ESSA Draft Plan Up for Public Comment
Woods' Chief of Staff, Matt Jones walked board members through the extensive development process of the Every Student Succeeds Act draft plan which has been released for public comment. Review the draft plan and provide feedback HERE.

2017 Milestones Update
Associate Superintendent for Assessment and Accountability Melissa Fincher provided an update on the 2017 Milestones testing administration that included an increase in online test administration and a decrease in testing interruptions.
