Can't Find, or Unhappy with Work? Read On

Many massage therapists have found great success in this profession. Many more have struggled, but make ends meet. Yet some have never found their way and are struggling to find work, to get their career off the ground.

In this article, I want to share my perspective as a teacher, a school administrator, employer, and as a successful massage therapist. My hope is that those of you that are successful will choose to share your knowledge as a mentor, or an author of articles for this newsletter. For those of you that are making ends meet, I hope to share ideas on how you can move up the ladder of success. But most of all, I want to offer ideas for those of you that are struggling to get started in this rewarding career.

Common Mistakes Made by the Clinical Massage Therapist Teacher
How do we teach to students about specific conditions, and what treatment protocols can be best used to resolve the problem?

We review the anatomy, the common causes, and discuss the associated conditions. We discuss the mechanism that can lead to the condition, and what are the common signs and symptoms. After all that is done formally, teachers will ask students, "So, let's suppose you have determined the problem is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Now tell me, what is wrong with your client?" In most cases, the student will respond with things like, "They have numbness and tingling in their lateral 3 and a half fingers.", or, "The pain wakes them up at night."...

New Chapter Board Structure
In June 2016, AMTA's National Board approved

a new chapter board structure to provide consistency among all chapters. The new structure is part of a multi-year culture initiative focusing on the value of the volunteer experience.

Some positions and titles have changed, and the new structure will be complete in its transition in 2018.  At that time, all chapters will have 5 elected board members: President, (2) Board Members, Secretary, and Financial Administrator. Below are the positions up for election in 2017 and subsequently in 2018. If you have any further questions about the process leading up to these changes, we will be providing more details on our chapter website. If you have questions about our elections or are interested in becoming a candidate...

U of Arizona Survey
And the Survey Says...

The University of Arizona is conducting a survey to better understand the opinions and experiences of licensed and practicing massage therapists regarding skin cancer prevention discussions with their clients. Interested LMTs can go to tinyurl.com/Uamassage to participate.

You will be entered to win a $50 prize after completing the survey.  If you have any questions, please contact the study at

The "Practice" of Massage
I have a massage therapy practice and have been a massage therapist since 1977.

At seminars I often ask attending therapists how long they have been practicing. Having a massage practice does not, however, mean that the therapist is also involved in massage "practice".

To fully understand this concept, we have only to look at other professions and disciplines. Professional golfers spend far more time on the driving range than they do on the golf course. The driving range is the place to experiment with new approaches to your shots, strategies, and techniques. Try these on the course and the odds are that you will end up far out of bounds, somewhere in a grove of trees or a field of broccoli.

AMTA-IL Chapter would like to say, "Welcome, new members!"
Thank you for joining AMTA-IL! It's our members that make us great!
