February 10, 2017

February 13-17, which includes Valentine's Day, is a great time to advocate for our great public schools. The Wisconsin Public Education Network is asking you to participate in any of a wide variety of activities to show your teachers, community, elected officials and decision makers why you love your public school! This could involve anything from delivering Valentines to your children's teachers, contacting your legislators, sponsoring a walk in your community, or using social media to share messages of support for public education.

Read on.

I love my public schools!

The WEAC Region 3 Board of Directors meeting previously scheduled for February 25th has been cancelled so that all Locals can send Presidents + other interested members to the February 25th workshop in Kaukauna.

WR3 will pay the $15 registration fee for all members attending.  Contact WEAC Region 3 to register!

The purpose of the Workshop is to provide information about current budget issues, the budget process in Wisconsin, and what happens at the Joint Finance Committee public listening sessions.  You'll learn how to tell your individual story, you'll be able to connect with other people who want to get involved, and you'll have fun in the process.

This workshop is not just for those who plan to testify.  It's for all who wish to make an impact on the budget and beyond, and share with their communities ideas on how to develop a budget that ensures strong schools and thriving communities.

Four regional workshops are planned around the state, and each has a WPEN partner on the planning team and will feature breakout session to plan pro-public education budget actions specifically for your region.

Wisconsin Public Education Network partners are planning to hold Testimony Tailgates at each of the four hearings, and will be coordinating efforts in each region to maximize their impact, bring people together, and ensure that testimony is as effective as possible. Details for these plans will become more detailed when the dates and locations of the JFC hearings are announced, but planning has already begun and will be coordinated at the regional Budget Action Workshops.

Vote Early in State Superintendent Race

There is an extremely important election for public education and kids this spring, and the early voting window for the February 21 primary will open soon. Typically, in-person absentee voting runs for two weeks before an election (February 7), ending at 5 p.m. or the close of business (whichever is later) on the Friday before the election, which is February 17, but in-person absentee voting dates and hours may vary by community. Contact your municipal clerk for dates and voting hours. The WEAC Political Action Committee and the WEAC Board of Directors are recommending the re-election of State Superintendent Tony Evers, who is a strong advocate for quality public schools. The General Election is April 4, and early voting for the General Election is typically March 20-31.  Find out more.

It is hard to believe, but I have been an AAA member since 1971 ( http://wisconsin.aaa.com). Because of my traveling and the location of my business, I have what is called the "Plus" membership.   Just recently, my Chevy HHR was disabled because of a battery and ignition cylinder failure (covered under warranty). The location was HWY 55 in the town of White Lake, WI-the closest cities being Shawano and Antigo.  READ the rest of my story.
