Glendale Chamber Board Member, Dr. Lily DeBlieux, Named 2017 Woman of the Year by West Valley Women
A champion for children, women, and a community leader, Dr. Lily DeBlieux will be honored for her commitment to Community and the West Valley October 3.

“I am excited to honor Dr. Lily Matos DeBlieux as West Valley Women's 2017 Woman of the Year. Dr. Lily is active in the community, well known, respected and empowers her students. She gives with her heart to make the world a better place. Yet, she is strong and understands ‘No’ is a sentence. I look at many qualities when selecting our honoree. One quality that always sticks out, "I want to be like her when I grow up." Lisa E. Platt, CEO and Chief Connection Officer, West Valley Women.

Dr. DeBlieux was appointed as the first bi-lingual, Latina Superintendent of the Pendergast Elementary School District in May 2014. She feels privileged to work in an environment with dedicated individuals and a Governing Board that supports “empowering excellence and success.”

Tools for Business
Why create a business plan?
Only 19% of small business owners use business planning. And 19% of small businesses survive at the end of each year. Coincidence?

Business planning doesn't guarantee success. However, most people wouldn't think of building a house without a set of building plans. Without a building plan, it is doubtful your foundation would be adequate, you might forget key parts of the plumbing, and your kitchen might end up where your bathroom should be.

The same situation will happen if you don't create a business plan. While you might think that you can keep everything in your head, your results are likely to be disappointing.

The  business plan  process helps you think through all parts of your business, establish a solid foundation, and puts you in a position for business growth. The parts of the business plan that you can't do or are hard for you, are the areas where you need professional help. A plumber building his own house hires experts in roofing and other unknown areas. You need to approach your business the same way.

Why I Serve

"I am thankful for the honor of serving on the Glendale Chamber of Commerce Board and that APS has been a long-standing member. I have the privilege of working at APS, a company that has built strong, long-standing relationships with chambers in cities and towns in which we serve, including Glendale.

For the past 130 years, an integral part of APS’s business model has been to support community economic growth and sustainability. That support comes in many ways:
· Employees, like me, serving on chamber boards across the state
· Leadership program support that helps build a strong community of next generation businesses and political leaders
· Financial support to local non-profit organizations who know how to best assist their neighbors

APS recognizes that small- and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of a healthy business climate, providing many jobs to Arizonans. That’s why we work on many fronts to help these businesses succeed. Through our support of chambers, as well as our Diverse Supplier Program, APS assists women- and minority-owned businesses by providing them with training, expertise and tools that can help them thrive.

But more than any of the reasons I’ve mentioned here, I serve because it’s simply the right thing to do.

I am a native of Glendale and am proud to be a part of the community I grew up in. I believe it’s my duty to leave the community better than when I arrived, and I have the great fortune of working for a company that supports that belief.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to do my part. As Mother Teresa said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

Patrick McDermott, APS

Downtown Glendale
Bringing a new buzz to downtown Glendale
Glendale is working to add a modern twist to an area that dates back to the 1800s.

"Downtown has the full attention of the council and the staff," said Council Jamie Aldama, who is helping lead the effort.

Last month, the Chamber of Commerce hired a Downtown Manager to work as a liaison between business owners and the city. An entertainment district was established earlier this year, allowing bars and liquor stores to open on a case-by-case basis near churches and schools -- and construction is underway to make a second alleyway more pedestrian friendly, with brick walkways, benches and lighting.

"What we were looking for is a nightlife," Aldama said, who added those efforts are already paying off with new restaurants opening in the area.

"I'm hoping that it's just going to explode," said Lisa Dowd, owner of A Shot of Java coffee shop. Dowd believes to lure in the next generation of shoppers and visitors the downtown area needs more diversity.

Why you should care about your employees’
healthcare data
By Mike Tilton, Vice President Sales at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona

In 2017, healthcare costs are expected to grow by more than 6 percent—far faster than overall inflation. Whether this increase is associated with the rising costs of prescription drugs or the growing number of individuals with chronic health conditions, getting smart about the source of healthcare costs has never been more critical.

As the cost of care continues to rise across the nation and in Arizona, employers may feel pressure to choose between shifting costs to employees and cutting benefits. However, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) encourages employers not to rush those decisions. Instead, they should take a closer look at the source of the costs to fully understand what benefit changes may be necessary or support programs that could be used to improve health and control costs.

“Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods”
A request from the Glendale Police Department:

"The Glendale Police department’s Community Action Team is putting together the “Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods” (GAIN) event and needs some assistance in the form of funding . The GAIN event is October 27th and it is taking place in Murphy park from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

The owner of Motion Media has graciously offered up his media truck to help Chamber members and downtown business owners promote their businesses during this event. The media truck is a huge electronic bill board that will be positioned at the entranceway of the event. Business owners will need to send Angela Boltz the JPEG files or thumb drives/logos from their business that can be added it to the mobile sign. I have personally seen the truck and it is amazing…..

In regards to funds, the Community Action Team is asking for a donation from the business owners in any amount they wish, to help cover production costs for GAIN night and for future community events. A donation is not necessary to participate, but greatly appreciated.

If owners want to help support the event and the Community Action Team, they can do so in the form of a check written to the “City of Glendale .” Be advised that the Glendale Police department is not a 501(c)(3) organization and this is not a tax deductible item; however, they should contact their tax advisors to claim it as a business expense, if they do choose to do so .

Aimee Tibbits ( [email protected] ) is the main contact person for the GAIN event and Angela Botz ( [email protected] ) is in charge of collecting the JPEG files or thumb drives/logos from the businesses. Both Aimee’s and Angela’s emails are included, so business owners can contact them directly."
