Glendale Celebrates IKEA's Plans for New Store
Development Boom Near Glendale Sports and Entertainment District Continues

The city of Glendale is thrilled that the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, IKEA has announced plans for a store to be built on the southeast corner of Bethany Home Rd. and the Loop 101. This is across from the Glendale Sports and
Entertainment District which includes the University of Phoenix Stadium, Gila River Arena, Cabela’s, Tanger Outlets and Westgate.

“IKEA choosing our city is further proof that major corporations agree Glendale is the place to grow and build their brand,” said Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps. “ The freeway access and visibility, the available workforce and the energy of Glendale’s Sports and Entertainment District make it the perfect location for IKEA. The presence of IKEA is a “game changer” that will accelerate additional growth and further elevate one of the most dynamic areas in Arizona.”

With 300 new jobs, IKEA will bring positive employment to Glendale in addition to
creating 500 construction jobs. Recognized as one of the top 100 places to work, IKEA
offers potential employees competitive pay and benefits for both full- and part-time
employees.

“This city has been amassing an impressive list of corporations that now call
Glendale home,” said Economic Development Director Brian Friedman. “These new
businesses account for more than two-million-square-feet of new construction in this
dynamic district alone. We are excited for the opportunity to welcome even more new
development, jobs and capital investment to the area because of IKEA’s presence.”
Friedman says the additional 30 acres immediately adjacent to IKEA will attract further
corporate development from businesses seeking to benefit from IKEA’s proximity.

“From my first meeting with the IKEA officials, it was my role as Mayor to impress upon
them that Glendale absolutely, positively wanted IKEA to locate in our city when they were
searching for a possible new location in Arizona,” said Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers. “We
demonstrated that by being responsive to their needs and working on their timeline. It
was exciting and very gratifying to see Glendale ultimately selected. The announcement
today continues the positive momentum that Glendale has been experiencing.”

“Visitors to the area already top 10 million per year,” said Councilmember Joyce Clark of
the Yucca District, location of choice for IKEA. “The presence of a fun and family-friendly
IKEA in Glendale will further enhance Glendale’s reputation as a retail, entertainment and
sports destination, not only providing residents and visitors even more reasons to shop
and play here but complimenting Tanger Outlet, a premier retail destination in the Valley.”

Pending approvals, construction of IKEA Glendale could begin in Fall 2018 with an
opening in Spring 2020. The city looks forward to working with IKEA as the project
advances through the approval and construction process.
Tools for Business
Why create a business plan?
Only 19% of small business owners use business planning. And 19% of small businesses survive at the end of each year. Coincidence?

Business planning doesn't guarantee success. However, most people wouldn't think of building a house without a set of building plans. Without a building plan, it is doubtful your foundation would be adequate, you might forget key parts of the plumbing, and your kitchen might end up where your bathroom should be.

The same situation will happen if you don't create a business plan. While you might think that you can keep everything in your head, your results are likely to be disappointing.

The  business plan  process helps you think through all parts of your business, establish a solid foundation, and puts you in a position for business growth. The parts of the business plan that you can't do or are hard for you, are the areas where you need professional help. A plumber building his own house hires experts in roofing and other unknown areas. You need to approach your business the same way.

“Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods”
A request from the Glendale Police Department:

"The Glendale Police department’s Community Action Team is putting together the “Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods” (GAIN) event and needs some assistance in the form of funding . The GAIN event is October 27th and it is taking place in Murphy park from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

The owner of Motion Media has graciously offered up his media truck to help Chamber members and downtown business owners promote their businesses during this event. The media truck is a huge electronic bill board that will be positioned at the entranceway of the event. Business owners will need to send Angela Boltz the JPEG files or thumb drives/logos from their business that can be added it to the mobile sign. I have personally seen the truck and it is amazing…..

In regards to funds, the Community Action Team is asking for a donation from the business owners in any amount they wish, to help cover production costs for GAIN night and for future community events. A donation is not necessary to participate, but greatly appreciated.

If owners want to help support the event and the Community Action Team, they can do so in the form of a check written to the “City of Glendale .” Be advised that the Glendale Police department is not a 501(c)(3) organization and this is not a tax deductible item; however, they should contact their tax advisors to claim it as a business expense, if they do choose to do so .

Aimee Tibbits ( [email protected] ) is the main contact person for the GAIN event and Angela Botz ( [email protected] ) is in charge of collecting the JPEG files or thumb drives/logos from the businesses. Both Aimee’s and Angela’s emails are included, so business owners can contact them directly."
