This Thanksgiving, Send Help!

On November 12 at 21:18 local time, a 7.3 earthquake hit the border region between Iran and Iraq, becoming the deadliest earthquake in 2017 to date, and the deadliest in Iran since 2012.The 30 second earthquake killed at least 450 people and injured more than 7,000 in Iran. An estimated 15,000 houses have been destroyed, leaving some 70,000 people homeless. The damage was further aggravated due to the fact that most of the homes in the region are made from mud bricks, resulting in a high number of casualties.

Child Foundation's local offices in Kermanshah, Sanandaj, Ilam, and Tehran are currently focusing resources to help those devastated by the earthquake. We are relieved to announce that the children who are supported by Child Foundation in the affected area are all well and healthy. Some have seen damages to their homes and we will work with their sponsors to aid in their repair. Child Foundation's office in Ilam has also been damaged by earthquake and needs repair and reinforcement.

Our immediate plans for the area are:
  • Sponsorship Programs: We are sending a team to Sarpol-e Zahab to expand our program to children in the earthquake stricken area. This will increase the number of students who will need monthly sponsorship.

  • Schools: With half of the schools destroyed or in need of heavy repair, our primary focus will be to return students to the classroom as soon as possible. We will do this by purchasing Conex units to be used as a temporary classrooms until permanent school structures are rebuilt.
Thanksgiving is just a few days away, please share your blessings by donating to Child Foundation's earthquake disaster relief effort. All proceeds will go directly to help the children in the affected area.

Conex?!.. What is Conex?
A Conex is a large, steel-reinforced, reusable container used in the shipping industry to transport goods and are often reused as building structure. It can be modified to be used as small living quarters, an office, and in this case, a small classroom. The structure is strong enough to withstand future earthquakes, while providing enough insulation to keep students warm in the winter. It is a fast and safe way to guarantee students are back in school.

The Child Foundation will purchase at least 50 units to get students back in the classroom as soon as possible. Individuals, groups, or organizations can sponsor an entire box or part of a Conex units. Those who sponsor an entire unit will have their names printed on its entrance wall and receive an official certificate with the location of their unit. An insulated, heated unit with double glass windows for 20 students will cost $6,200.

To help send these children to a warm and safe classroom this winter, please contact us here or donate to our Kermanshah Earthquake Fund here.

Meet Amir-Hossein & Kani
AmirHossein (Jahrom)
Kani (Bookan)

My name is Amir Hossein and I live with my mother and grandmother. My parents are divorced because of my father's drug abuse.

While we have received some help from a local charity, we are no longer eligible to receive further support.

My mother has bought a house through loans, but we cannot live in it until the loans are paid.

My mother works in office administration and does not get paid very well.

I love going to school and hope to continue to do so through your generous support.

M y name is Kani and I was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of three. My father has the same disease and is unable to work because of this condition.

I travel to Tehran every two months for medical appointments, which adds to the already expensive medical bills. My mother has taken out loans to help pay for my medical expenses, which we pay in installments. However, we have not been able to pay the past six payments.

My mother has depression and has had surgery on both hands to unblock veins. Despite the pain in her hands, she works at three different locations as a maid in order to pay the family's expenses. Please consider donating to help me continue my education.

U.S.  Sanctions
& Donations

Many have started fundraising on their own to help the earthquake victims, with some utilizing social media outlets like Facebook.

Please note, if you are donating through Facebook or other private online fundraising efforts, U.S. government sanctions will prohibit those funds from being released to Iran. Only organizations with a proper license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) will be permitted to send financial aid to Iran.

Child Foundation is among the few organizations in the United States that carries this license and can ensure your financial support directly reaches those who are in need.

Please contact us if you have questions about safe and legal ways to help.
I'm Hossein from Zahedan
My name is Hossein and my favorite subject is applied sciences. My father was a driver but has been unemployed for several years due to disease related complications.

My mother works as a housekeeper and babysitter and we receive some social security insurance, however this hardly covers our expenses.
One of my six older sisters still lives with us and attends university.

Our house is very old and does not meet standard safety requirements. With all of these constraints, my parents cannot afford our education. Your support will help ensure that I graduate and have a chance at a better life.

Four Stars from Charity Navigator
On November 16, Charity Navigator, a highly respected charity watchdog, sent an encouraging tweet guiding people to donate toward the Iran earthquake relief effort through the Child Foundation, the only four-star charity working on the ground in Iran.
