We asked Schiffy. . .

Q. How long have you been running?
A.  " My mother said I started running in the womb, but actually it was a long time ago. I think I started when I was a young child, playing tag, running relay races, and always running to catch up with my older brother.   I grew up in an era in which girls were not encouraged to be in involved in sports or fitness. Despite the bias against girls, I was constantly involved in all kinds of sports in middle school, high school, and college. I played varsity volleyball, basketball, and softball. As a result of all my athletic endeavors, I easily developed a lifestyle of and dedication to fitness. This naturally led me to start running as a part of my exercise and conditioning regimen. My love of exercise and fitness inspired me to become a public school physical education instructor. "

Q. When was your first race?
A. " I started participating in 5k and 10k races back in the 1980s. Once I got hooked on running races, I gradually added triathlons in my early 30's to my racing schedule, and, in 1996-1997 I was ranked 33rd in triathlons the United States in the 40-44 age group. I have since added adventure races, duathlons, and half marathons to my racing schedule. "

Q. What does an average training week look like for you?
A. " My schedule is very hectic, as I continue to teach physical education, coach my high school's cross-country team, act as the sponsor of the Healthier Generation Program at my school, and care for my two beautiful daughters, five dogs, and my elderly mom. Consequently, it's difficult to be on an exercise/training schedule, so I run with my students and my dogs, and on Mondays and Thursdays run with the groups that I train. I also do indoor cycling in my house. All of this seems to get me through and still be able to compete in running races and triathlons. I now compete for the love of staying in shape no matter the distance, and always try to do my best. My motto now is "it's all about the finish! "

Q. What motivates you to run?
A. " My motivation to continue running is being able to motivate people to be fit for life. For over 35 years I have encouraged students to find joy in running and exercising, and that is the best incentive to keep me doing what I love. It is wonderful to assist people in realizing their running and exercise goals and witnessing the physical and emotional transformation of my students and neighbors as they adopt a healthy lifestyle.

I thank Runner's Depot for giving me the chance to motivate more people through Shape-up with Schiffy. Runner's Depot has given me an awesome opportunity to reach out not only to my students, but to the community at large to help them get fit for life through running and incorporating a total body workout. I'm very proud that, after three years of doing Shape-up with Schiffy, we have helped changed hundreds of lives. We also have incorporated three levels (A, B, and C groups) so there are no excuses. The comradery we share while rigorously running and exercising on Thursday nights in Aventura is so special. Thank you again for helping me do what I love.

Also, the IVES 5k Race that Runner's Depot has helped me offer to the community for the last two years has been wonderful. The community overwhelmingly responded and we have been lucky enough to raise a substantial amount of money to fight childhood obesity and to assist homeless veterans. "
