New works from
Stephen Scott Young
Modern Master

Sailing Out to Eluthra Island   15x22   watercolor and pen & ink

Contemporary artist Stephen Scott Young (b. 1957) is best known for his watercolor paintings.  His impressive technique in that medium has earned him frequent comparisons with Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth.  His work is noted for his strikingly realist use of watercolor and eloquent simplicity of subject matter done in the American realist tradition.
Young was born in Honolulu, lives in Florida, and spends time in the Bahamas each year.  His works are currently on display at several major American museums including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.  He is featured in the permanent exhibits of the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and the Greenville County Museum in South Carolina.  A collection of his current works are now available through the Wells Gallery on Kiawah Island.

The Regatta Series:

Strong Winds   16x19   pen & ink

Stephen Scott Young's latest pieces come from his Regatta Series which is greatly inspired by Winslow Homer's marine paintings, and this collection is an homage to the master artist.  Scott Young is a realist master himself.  He is one of only a handful of living artists ever to have a solo-show at Christie's (2012).  Dr. William Gerdts, professor emeritus of art history at City University of New York and the author of over twenty-five books on American art, says of  Young:
"Young is one of the preeminent realists at work today.
He is an heir to Andrew Wyeth and Winslow Homer, two of the greatest painters this country has produced."

The Regatta Series seeks to capture the watercraft and the people that man them.  There is a long tradition of boating in the Bahamas and the Southern US.  The subjects of these works are men who earn their livings working on, and fishing from boats.  All of the paintings feature row boats, or sail boats, and the people he paints rely on the wind, and their own strength, to drive their craft.
